Nice cheap CPUs, but the lack of OC ability for the low core multiplier kills it.

Hey guys I just got my 2 E5-2670's in the mail a few mins ago,so all I am waiting for is the motherboard to show up. it was supposed to be here yesterday but guess not till Monday now. So I was thinking I would like a new Low energy using Graphics card and Low energy using Ram.Any one know what Im looking for that could point me in the right direction? Im trying to cut my electric bill down as much as possible while keeping my PC on for as long as possible. It needs to be able to play 4k video though.

If you want to cut your electric bill, buy a cheap arm board not a power hog of a xeon e5

It will handle 4k video @HEVC and basic browsing with 2-5W total power use.

You can still max out the turbo and get better CPU performance than any desktop CPU out there. It's slightly better than my 3930K at 4.5GHz.

Are you going to run it 24/7 as a server or as a windows workstation? If you can put it to sleep when you're not using it, it will help. I think a lot of supermicro boards won't support s3 sleep mode though so choosing the right motherboard is probably key here.

Because the 16 cores will be the biggest consumer of power in your machine by far. You just ordered a Big Mac and a Diet Coke. YOU stop trolling.

If you need the power, but want to do it efficiently, then you want to do it like the enterprise data centers.

You stop trolling.

If I recall correctly some one in the L5639 thread was asking this same question but about these x79 motherboards a while back and everyone laughed at him and told him not to waste his time but now look who's laughing. We all should have listened to that guy back then and we would all of had some kickass mobo's ready to go for these x79 Xeons. So I say heck yeah "Denithor" buy the most kick ass X99 motherboard you can get for the cheapest you can and shelf that bad boy till next summer when those 16c/32t or 18c/36t Xeons hit ebay. For that matter buy up as many as you can afford and hoard them till the time comes to make a few bucks on the side.

Man, this is a good idea... buy an X99 now that'll work with the high-end Haswell server chips and just drop one in when they start showing up on eBay.

Using it mostly for Video/Audio editing and encoding in Linux. It only needs to be up and running during this time. I am coming from a i7 4820K which is 130w at stock and god only knows how much wattage it was using when it was overclocked to 4.2Ghz, but this E5-2670 is only 115w. I was also using a R9 270x 4gb GPU and it was chewing through the electric as well. So I downgraded to a R7 260x. Now its time to upgrade the GPU without killing the electric bill.
That is why I asked for advice on GPU and Ram.. I would use a Arm SOC like Rpi 2 or even Shield Tv but they dont have the power to do editing or encoding.

I see. hopefully someone else can comment on the ram and video card. If you're only going to run it when you're editing you should be good. Either way you saved a bundle by buying a 70 dollar 8C16T cpu so that should offset the power costs pretty good.

Here's a good deal on low voltage RDIMMS, you might want to take a look at....

For GPU, I think it would be better to deal until the 16nm GPU's come out. They may not be much cheaper initially relative to performance of the old cards, but should use a ton less electricity. TDP is not really power usage, its the heat created by the CPU when doing 'normal' stuff, so cant really use this as an accurate guide to how much power it will use.

Have you actually worked out how much you are spending on power? If your only using them a few hours a day its going to take a long time to break even. Even my gaming PC can take years for a more efficient GPU or CPU to be worth paying more for and I use this PC 7 days a week for several hours a day.

I was using my 4820K 24/7 and my electric bill was nuts.. Been using my AMD 5350 for the past 2 weeks but sold that as well. Video Encoding was F'ing nuts on that thing,so so slow else I would have used that."rchunter" I am using a Asus P9X79-e WS Motherboard with my E5-2670 so does that board take the Ram you provided in that link cause that is an amazing price for that amount.

I think he's going to need unbuffered ecc i'm not for sure but I don't think his board uses registered dimms.

I ordered 2 E5-2670s, 16 x 8GB DDR3 ECC RAM kit, and an Asus Z9Pe-D16 motherboard.

The RDIMM's can be used with the Asus Z9Pe-D16, but intel doesn't allow registered ram with X79..

My CPU shipped the next day after I bought it, but my board hasn't shipped yet. I'm going to be very unhappy if it's not shipped by Monday. Ebay says it's supposed to be here by 3/4, but I don't see how they would know.

What mobo did you end up going with? The Sabertooth? Also thanks for the Mobo info. So will it take the Ecc stuff you posted in that link?
