This little 23.5 inch splitting axeis light enough that you could use it like a hatchet, but gives you a bit more reach, and LOTS of great control if you use 2 hands. Also, scissors are dangerous! Fiskars makes them too.

Also, even though they suck for defense, I would argue that a chainsaw is even more scary sounding then a pump action shotgun. So, maybe get yourself a nice meaty chainsaw ....

This + this wouldn't be a bad combo, but NY is lame and thinks pepper balls are the Devil.

If a gun is not an option then a metal bat would be best; just swing hard and don't miss.

I'm going to go ahead and assume the OP started this thread just to get a rise out of people. Any halfwit seeking home defense, sincerely at least, has already figured out whether or not he can purchase a firearm in his locale. Posting "home defense but no gun" is just him trying to start a shitstorm.

It's a pretty reasonable question in the hypothetical sense. I also think a BB gun's a good choice for a distraction weapon. You'd better be following it up with something better though, or you're gonna be screwed. My first choice would be a short sword, but an axe would also be acceptable.

So, you start out with the BB gun and then if that doesn't deter them you ask them to wait while you go get your real gun? Or an axe?

No, you shoot with the BB gun in one hand, and an axe in the other. While their mind's focused on the excruciating pain of the BB shot, you get down to the real work. My first choice hand weapon would be a short sword. I've spent many years swinging a machete, and it's what I'm best at.

Crossbow or GTFO.

This is what I was thinking. Those can cause serious damage and reload somewhat quickly while your target is still screaming obscenities, provided that you aren't in arms reach when you fire it. Melee weapons work too whether they be the bludgeoning type (baseball bat/cast iron skillet) or the slicing/stabby kind (knife/sword/mase).

reload a crossbow quickly?

There is a reason that although they had better penetrating power than many rifles at the time they were not used as much.

Aren't there crossbows that will feed new arrows, you just have to repull the string? That's enough time for an attacker to completely disarm you. Crossbow loses unless you're hunting human.

if you have good aim, a couple of bb shots to the face will make anybody run away.

Yeah right. Good luck with that.

It would cause the nancy boys on this forum to run away for sure but no hardened criminal would think twice about beating the shit out of you for shooting him in the face with a bb gun.

Yah, all a bb gun is going to do is seriously piss some one off.

Or it will make you get shot with something a little bigger than a BB gun.

Pretty much this. If you pull any kind of weapon, you have to be prepared to deal death. You've just up the stakes, and if you don't follow through with it, the intruder very likely will.

Thanks for the read people. I haven't laughed this hard in a while. BB guns? Really? Axes? Crossbows? LMAO.

What do you want on your tombstone?

That's because the premise was that guns were hard/impossible to get as clearly stated in the OP.

I have a Crossman .177 caliber hunting pellet gun that does somewhere on the order of 900fps using CO2 cartridges

900fps from a Crosman 357 CO2 pellet pistol?

That will require backing up.

I'll bet 450fps tops, since I have owned a few of them.

Totally useless for any sort of defense unless you think you can take an eye out...

I'd be surprised if any CO2 rifle/gun can do 900fps. That's where low end match grade rifles start(spring piston). I thought CO2 topped out around 700fps.

Whether or not a firearm is or isn't difficult to acquire in the OP's City/State has zero bearing in the absolute hilarity of attempting defense of the home with a BB gun, crossbow or ax. Thanks for playing though, you're a funny guy!

If someone was in my house, they better be absolutely committed to using that gun, because I could very easily take a head off quicker than shit with my machete and they wouldn't have much time to think about it ;^)

so how about stun with taser, then bash with baseball bat?
