yeah. What i like about both lowe's and HD is that workers in the departments know what the heck they are talking about. One of my nice lamps (like 30 yrs old) was having a problem. i went in and was looking for a lamp to match the other. The guy in the department showed me step by step how to fix it (i had to bring in the lamp).

Then i started working as a cashier part time (hey $11 /hr!) adn found out that the guy was a retired electrician. They also have people with years experiance in charge of each department.

hell the guy in the septic area told me step by step how to replace and setup my sump pump and battery backup. even helped me get what i needed. i was going to buy the best setup ($600 ) and he said that was overkill.

ok..im rambling but HD, lowe's are good.

one area where HD beats Lowes hands down is classes. HD holds classes for various simple projects like tiling, flooring, etc. Lowes dosnt offer that.

And yea, if you see an older guy working at these stores, chances are he is a retired professional working there just for fun.

Are these classes free?

Yea there's usually a sign outside of most home depot's that say when the classes are or just ask someone that works in a department when they are.

By now the old paint may also be somewhere between flat and eggshell or some other mix. Old paint and new paint will mostly never look exactly the same if it's to much apart in age.

I've worked as a painter, and the only time I've seen new (color-matched) paint match sheen with the old paint is when the original is flat.

Yea many people don't realize it's practically impossible for old paint to match new paint.

Yep.

The best method is to repaint an entire wall or trim board that needs patching. At least that way the entire surface is consistent.

It's much harder to tell the difference in sheen/color between two different walls than it is with two types of paint on the same surface.

Maybe some Home Depots have competent workers, but not all of them. My local HD only has a handful of people who know their stuff. And, they're horrible about helping you. They'll walk right past you and pretend they don't hear you asking for help.

Gloss-->Semi-gloss-->Satin-->Pearl-->Eggshell-->Flat-->Super Flat.

The glossier the paint the more durable it is and easier to clean, but more prone to show imperfections in the wall. I'm an Eggshell kinda guy.

Note: one brand's Pearl might be glossier than another's Satin.

Seriously? Lowes is always cheaper than Home Depot for everything I've bought. I think that's pretty standard too, which is how Lowes gets away with having a 110% price match guarantee. Otherwise, they'd have to price match everything.

My worst Home Depot experience was getting plywood from them. Home Depot is closer to me than Lowes so I went there first. I got plywood and brought it home. "MADE IN CHINA". Funny... who cares. But I need more. I decide to go to Lowes for the rest of my plywood and not only was the plywood made in the USA, it was $2 cheaper per sheet.

So the color was accurate, but the sheen wasn't? Who picked the type of paint?

The "sheen" of the pain can vary greatly from brand to brand as well.

What's semi-gloss in one brand may be eggshell in another, or glossy in yet another brand. It's often more difficult to exactly match finish than it is to match color...
(finish is determined by the manufacturer...not the guy in the paint department. It's usually up to the customer to pick the one he/she thinks is closest.)

Right. Color match is quite easy actually. Sheen is harder to match. My friend didn't pick the paint. He handed the sample to the guy at the paint counter and said "match this". The computer matches the color, but the guy behind the counter should be matching the sheen. And without having a dry sample of the new paint, because he didn't have a heat gun, he couldn't make sure the paint matched.

Total opposite here. HD is almost always cheaper than Lowes. I do shop a lot at Lowes though because it's closer, lol.

Honestly, expecting someone at HD or Lowes to match sheen on a paint chip is a bit of a stretch. Paint changes sheen with age and daily wear and tear. Plus, if you didn't specifically ask him to match sheen...well duh. Most people only ask to match color and that is probably what he took it as.

Personally I never buy paint at lowes. Behr is the best paint from either one of the Borgs and is way better than the Valspar stuff. We've had them match paint before, but I'm intelligent enough to tell them what sheen I need.

The one down the street from my house USED to have some very knowledgable employees...then, a few years ago, HD got a new CEO, (and apparently, a new management team) and they started firing all the long-time employees who actually knew anything. Their big offense? Making too much money.

Now, it seems like their people have never worked in the trades in any form...and don't know a 2x4 from a 4x2...

When the Lowes here first opened almost 10 years ago, Home Depot had the knowledgable staff...Lowes hired the people who couldn't get hired at HD...now, it's more-or-less just the opposite.

Hardly. If the surface is unpainted the primer helps it stick.

Home Depot is cheaper here than Lowes. I hang out in the electrical side of things myself and usually find better stuff at Home Depot as far as basic devices goes (riveted outlets and switches at HD vs just plastic welded/glued at Lowes, for example).

My parents' house has 3 different types of circuit breaker boxes in it though, so we just have to remember to go to lowes for the Cutler-Hammer in the generator panel, Home Depot for the Square-D in the main panel, and then some random place to find the Federal Pacific stuff for the basement sub panel (though I'm trying to get my dad to replace that one, they aren't good boxes at all).

Well... this guy's heat gun was broke so he couldn't do that.

Yeah... Home Depot sells heat guns. So you'd think he'd just grab a heat gun off the shelf, tell a manager to take it out of inventory and move on. Nope. This guy's heat gun was broke and his attitude was pretty much "it'll match, don't worry."

My friend should've known better, but he just wanted to get out of there. Sooo... guess what? The color matched, but the paint was a bit too glossy. *sigh*

The next day, we go to Lowes.....

WTF, the color matched, what is your problem.

If it's too glossy your friend is the idiot who decided on eggshell instead of flat, not the Home Depot guy.

Actually, there was a formulation change in paint not all that long ago stemming from a new government regulation (they lowered the limit on lead or something). As such, even getting the same gloss doesn't mean that the paint will match. We have that problem at our place...we have EXACTLY the same color, but the glossiness is different.

no way. perhaps the lighting/carpet/floor reflected light that changed its perceived color. but i seriously doubt it would go that far.

yup, primer is just made for stickiness. paint has to hold pigment as well.

It doesn't matter if there was a formulation change cus the paint wouldn't have matched anyways. That's why people should always get more paint than they need so it's hopefully from one batch. It's the same thing like buying flooring since flooring varies so much as well.
