I went with a friend to a Home Depot for some paint. He brought a paint chip with him to match up. The guy behind the counter scanned the chip and mixed up a can. Typically, they put a dab of the paint on the lid and dry it with a heatgun so you can make sure the paint matches your chip before you leave the store.

Well... this guy's heat gun was broke so he couldn't do that.

Yeah... Home Depot sells heat guns. So you'd think he'd just grab a heat gun off the shelf, tell a manager to take it out of inventory and move on. Nope. This guy's heat gun was broke and his attitude was pretty much "it'll match, don't worry."

My friend should've known better, but he just wanted to get out of there. Sooo... guess what? The color matched, but the paint was a bit too glossy. *sigh*

The next day, we go to Lowes.....

WTF, the color matched, what is your problem.

If it's too glossy your friend is the idiot who decided on eggshell instead of flat, not the Home Depot guy.

So the color was accurate, but the sheen wasn't? Who picked the type of paint?

It will be a little glossier than normal at first. After a couple days, it will match fine.

How sweet, two guys shopping for paint together.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

HD usually has marginally lower prices than Lowes. But Lowes 10% off coupons are easier to get.

yeah. What i like about both lowe's and HD is that workers in the departments know what the heck they are talking about. One of my nice lamps (like 30 yrs old) was having a problem. i went in and was looking for a lamp to match the other. The guy in the department showed me step by step how to fix it (i had to bring in the lamp).

Then i started working as a cashier part time (hey $11 /hr!) adn found out that the guy was a retired electrician. They also have people with years experiance in charge of each department.

hell the guy in the septic area told me step by step how to replace and setup my sump pump and battery backup. even helped me get what i needed. i was going to buy the best setup ($600 ) and he said that was overkill.

ok..im rambling but HD, lowe's are good.

Well of course krylon is going to defend the paint mixer.

Don't you select the type of paint you want? If the color matched then it would seem like the guy (+computer) did his job - he can't make the paint match if one is glossy and the other is not.

one area where HD beats Lowes hands down is classes. HD holds classes for various simple projects like tiling, flooring, etc. Lowes dosnt offer that.

And yea, if you see an older guy working at these stores, chances are he is a retired professional working there just for fun.

The "sheen" of the pain can vary greatly from brand to brand as well.

What's semi-gloss in one brand may be eggshell in another, or glossy in yet another brand. It's often more difficult to exactly match finish than it is to match color...
(finish is determined by the manufacturer...not the guy in the paint department. It's usually up to the customer to pick the one he/she thinks is closest.)

I get my paint at Lowes. did the house in Polar White to reflect heat. works great but it's blinding to look at.

Seriously? Lowes is always cheaper than Home Depot for everything I've bought. I think that's pretty standard too, which is how Lowes gets away with having a 110% price match guarantee. Otherwise, they'd have to price match everything.

My worst Home Depot experience was getting plywood from them. Home Depot is closer to me than Lowes so I went there first. I got plywood and brought it home. "MADE IN CHINA". Funny... who cares. But I need more. I decide to go to Lowes for the rest of my plywood and not only was the plywood made in the USA, it was $2 cheaper per sheet.

Right. Color match is quite easy actually. Sheen is harder to match. My friend didn't pick the paint. He handed the sample to the guy at the paint counter and said "match this". The computer matches the color, but the guy behind the counter should be matching the sheen. And without having a dry sample of the new paint, because he didn't have a heat gun, he couldn't make sure the paint matched.

Does it matter what caused the pain?

By now the old paint may also be somewhere between flat and eggshell or some other mix. Old paint and new paint will mostly never look exactly the same if it's to much apart in age.

QFT

I've worked as a painter, and the only time I've seen new (color-matched) paint match sheen with the old paint is when the original is flat.
