My house has two floors and a basement. In order to limit running up and down stairs and yelling to people behind closed doors I became interested in an intercom. I'd like 3 stations, one on each floor, which could contact the other ones. I've seen some CAT5 systems but in addition to being really expensive (hundreds of dollars) they seem pretty complex for what seems like a pretty basic setup to me. I have CAT5 in place that I could rewire to each of the rooms to some system but with the prohibitive cost I sort of balked. I'm not looking to install a security system or anything that elaborate.
I saw there were "wireless" cheap units on Amazon that plug in. But they have bad reviews generally with people having trouble. I don't know why these would have some much trouble since I've used powerline networking adapters in my house and they work pretty well, but they probably use a different way of transmitting. These are affordable ($30, $60, less than $100) and I'm thinking of just trying them out since they seem simple enough.
But is there any simple cheap option that can run over cat5 wiring? I'm having trouble finding something like that and don't even know where to look.
