home-made round IDE cables?

i was looking at these rounded cables on compgeeks... then this idea hits me...
---what if we just use some rubber bands to tie up the ribbon cables to make them thinner? would it damage anything?
and another question... the IDe cables in my case are touching the DDR stick... should i move it out of the way ASAP?

i am willing to spend $5 for rounded cables but shipping kills the whole idea...

Yes, you can still do this and you wont damage anything, but you'll find that you can't squeeze in the cable close to the connections, so a lesser fraction of the cable will be round. That and rubber bands perish after a year or so in the system. It's not really much point.
If you want to make your own, run a sharp down the cable about 6 or 8 times. But this is tedious making sure you don't cut a wire, or less seriously bare one.

There is no problem with an IDE cable touching the RAM. As long as they are clear of fans.

It's actually pretty easy to do, and you don't really have to worry about cutting a wire if you're careful. Just make a small slit between two wires, and then peel them apart from one end to another using your hands. From there, just bunch them up. I wrapped the entire bunched cable in electrical tape; it keeps it neat and the black makes it sort of less visible.

Yes, that'd work. But is it worth the saving you make on not buying rounded cables?

I did my SCSI 80pin with just folding it and sticking it in wire loom....worked well and didn't risk an expensive cable...

IDE is easy though and if you screw one chances are another is easy to get for a dollar or find on someone's shelf.

Well... I was bored one night and thinking about airflow so I thought I might as well.

But still, rounded IDE cables were $30 (CDN) at a local shop, and since I needed four, it wouldn't have necessarily been cheap.
