Hello,
I am trying to set up a home network. I want to do this so i can enable file sharing between the main computers, as well as (more importantly) printer sharing. As well on my current computer ( a macbook pro , tiger OS X) I am trying to set up apache. I am haveing trouble getting all the settings right for printing sharing and apache. I got my network to only give out specific ip adresses which is good. I then set up my mom's Windows XP machine to 192.168.2.101 and mine is 192.168.2.100. That seeemed to work but now neither can log into the router. As well i got apache to work internally but noone outside of the network can see it even though i port forwarded port 80 for my computer. For printer sharing i have gotten it to see my mom's compouter (the printer is installed on my mom's compouter and i want everyone to be able to use it) but when i put in the username nad password of her login it does not show the printer and i'm not sure why. I don't really need the static ip's but for apache and filesharing i wasn't sure if i needed that so i didn't have to keep changing where it was looking to see the files or the website. If don't need static ip's and there are ways around it that 'd be great. The computers in the house (mainly) are a mac nad a PC. And we have a dsl modem and a wireless router (usually i have my coputer wireless and my mom's but occasionally i will wire it). Any help is appreciated, i'm so confused at this point.

I know this is probably annoying to help me but it would be appreciated

Okay so i got file sharing up, but when i try to add the printer from teh XP computer it doesnt' find it... any help... like i go into add printer, more printers, windows printing, malikk (my workgroup), then i put in the username password of the login for the computer with the printer and it just stays blank... what are your thoughts?

As well i can see my website internally with my local ip and my non=local ip but not outside of hte network... i have port forwarded port 80 so i dont' see the problem.

As well is there any reason iw ouldn't be able to get into the router the way i have things set up... I have this computer as a static ip the gateway pointing to the router and everything else is controlled by the DHCP set up in the router... everything is wireless atm i have nothing wired in becuase all the computers are upstairs at the moment. Suggestions would be great

It sounds like you might be trying to test your port forwarding from inside your own network. Many SOHO routers won't allow that and the test is invalid. Be sure to do any testing of port forwarding from a PC OUTSIDE your own network.

Is thre any reason that my router would work and be green accross the board... BUT when i try to connect into it through 192.168.2.1 it says.... he connection was refused when attempting to contact 192.168.2.1.

If anyone knows why this would happen and how to fix it so i can actually log into my router, that'd be great!

"Green" just means that you've connected the cables. It doesn't mean that you have IP connectivity.

You manually set the LAN IP address of your router to 192.168.2.1? I'll assume you set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. In that case, then a PC with IP address 192.168.2.100/32 should be able to connect to the router's management screen.

If you didn't disable the DHCP server on the router, then set a PC to "Automatically configure network settings" and let it boot. It should receive an IP address and subnet mask that will allow it to talk to the router. Use an IP utility (such as IPCONFIG /ALL in Windows) to double check the Default Gateway, assuring that it's actually 192.168.2.1 as you stated. After you've confirmed that this work, then you can take a second look at the router's managment screens again.

I have made sure that the gateways are actually 192.168.2.1 and yes the router is set up for the lan ip to be 192.168.2.1 and the dhc p to be 192.168.2.100-106 and nothing can conec t ot this router.

the router is a linksys WRT110 the modem is a westell 2200 i just find out my westell is also a router ... just not wireless like i need... maybe that's my issue with apache... since i have technically 2 routers.

Okay so i got apache to internally show up if i use internal and external ip's... i'm thinking either apache config file is not set up right or something i can't see in my router is going crazy.

i finally got filesharing, printing, apache etc. to work. Filesharing through workgroups and just allowing it in preferences. Printing, actually our printer died yesterday (wel today i haven't gone to bed yet it's 2am haha) and so we got another one and it had wireless G on it so it's a network printer now basically. the apache was the ahrdest. I ended up having to make my dsl modemo a bridge becuase it also was a router and i found that out late in the game. Then i mae my router have all teh DSL information. I then tried to forwardx port 80 but i found out as well DSL blocks this type of action from happening by blocking port 80. So through some help i found out a way to get around or fix this is by changing the port so i did that, but it didnt' quite work until i made the apache port different and changed port forwarding to make the external port differentt than 80, similating with apache's port and the internal port 80.

Thanks for your helps guys I'm finally almost set haha. Just little tweaks and such.

Either put the Westell modem into "Transparent Bridging" mode or lose the Linksys router. Trying to use dual routers without strong networking knowledge is asking for trouble.

You can still use the Linksys' WiFi section if you configure it properly as an "access point" rather than as a router.

If I was you, I'd get my networking working correctly before I worried about Apache. Also, don't forget that many ISPs block inbound TCP Port 80 on home Internet accounts, effectively blocking "standard" web hosting.

yea well what id id and it seemed to work, is forward externally port 6882 (what i set apache to) then intenrally port 80 ... so that way it kind of "bypassed" verizon's block. And yea, i still need to iron out my networking. I haven't done it for awhile and am a ilttle behind taht's why this is not going as smoothly as i like, i may just giv eup on apache since i do have a provider who will not like me web hosting but i'd still like to try at this pointa and either way i can still use it internally so i don't have to host it everytime i want to look at it (if ther's PHP or CGI or anything).
