I saw similar posts, but did not find my exact question. I apologize in advance if it has been asked and answered and my search skills are lacking.
My current (likely inefficient) set-up:
DSL enters home at network box in attic. DSL modem connected directly in attic. In-wall cable from attic to computer bay. Computer bay has two Ethernet ports. One brings network from DSL modem and is connected to Apple TimeCapsule. NOTE: My DSL modem can serve as a wireless router, but it is older and I don't trust its security. Not that it is unsecure, but I understand my Apple set-up better and trust it more.
From the Apple TimeCapsule it goes back to attic using the second computer bay Ethernet port. Also in the attic I have a Buffalo Technology unmanaged 8-port Gigabit switch. The network box includes two 6-port patch panels. Not all of them are being used. I connect the switch to those ports that are being used. Now to the question.
From the attic, three of the ports end at single terminals where I have multiple devices that I want to connect by wired internet instead of wireless. First includes TV, PS3 and Wii. Second includes TV and BluRay (future PS4 here, too). Third includes TV, Bluray and AppleTV. Can I put a switch at each of those locations without problems?
Also, I have a second, older model TimeCapsule. Can I use that at one of those locations as a switch? It will also run wireless so I can have wireless upstairs and downstairs to try and expand wireless reach. That is the primary reason I need to go wired, because my current wireless isn't cutting it. I can't run Netflix in many places in my house.
My wireless goes to numerous handhelds and a couple laptops. No, my internet speeds are not fast enough to power all of these devices at once, but rarely are more than two locations being used at once and my family knows how to share the bandwidth, e.g. someone goes without. We are in an area with only one provider and I already pay for the fastest DSL available.
Thanks in advance.
