Home Network - Win200 and Win98SE - Possible?

Is it possible to connect two computers on a home network with one machine running Windows 2000 and the other running Windows 98SE? If so, any suggestions on how to set them up?
I tried setting up each machine with the same workgroup name, but they cannot see the other computer on the network. The Windows 98SE machine is set as 192.168.0.1 and 255.255.255.0. The Windows 2000 machine is set as 192.168.0.6 and 255.255.255.0.

This is the first time I have attemped networking a machine with Windows 2000. I noticed the TCP/IP settings in Windows 2000 appear different than in Windows 98SE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I had the same problem as you, exactly. Win98SE/Win2k, same workgroup name, but nada, kaput. You should install NetBUI in both machines and that should make them able to see each other for file & printer sharing. Just go into Windows2K and click on My Network places and click on Add Network Place and a Wizard will come up. in the search box type //192.168.0.1 and it should find your 98 machine just fine without NetBUI

I have a network running with one Win2k, two Win98SE, one Win98, and one Win95SR2. All machines see each other just fine and access shared resources without any problem. Assuming you have all network stuff setup you should be able to "Ping" each other through the network. If you have both NetBEUI and TCP/IP protocols, you have to enable "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" option or "Obtain NetBIOS setting from Server" on Win2K machine.

Before your Win9x machines can see your Win2k resources you need to create user accounts on Win2k machine using the same login name and password you use on Win9x machines. That is because Win2k uses user level access control instead of resource level one.

On Win9x machine you might want to enable "Browse Master" option.

Actually the best way of doing this kind of mixed networking it to use TCP/IP only. But if your games require other protocols you don't have a choice, do you?

1. enable protocols..tcp/ip, ipx/spx, netbeui
2. in 98 machine enabke file print sharing
3. in 2000 machine enable guest account
3. make sure two machine is in same workgroup

that should be it...
