Every guy needs to have his pipes cleaned regularly...at least once per year...more often is preferable.

I advise the following on a monthly basis for the kitchen sink:
Fill (to the top) the sink with HOT water, add one cup household bleach, pull the stopper.
The hot water loosens any built-up grease while the bleach cleans and sanitizes.
You can do this in bathroom sinks every so often to help flush out soap scum and hair, also.

This actually makes sense to me.

when i meant 'shove solids down' i mean solids that fit through those 4 little holes in the botton of your sink. not even the strainer, but where the strainer sits there usually a bracket and that makes the drain small as it is. if you can get something to go through it, it will run down the pipes just fine.

as others mentioned, when you grind up food it creates sludge. i have seen pipes 10ft long packed absolutely full of it. garbage disposals are the reason. they are convenient, but they can easily clog up pipes.

I pour a cup of floor stripper down each drain each month. Disolves buildup, doesn't work for clogged drains. It's cheaper and the same stuff as the Drano maintenance stuff.

For the other pipes, have your wife clean them out. Rinse. Repeat.

is that the same as paint stripper ?

You can fit little rocks down the strainer...they are just going to sit in the trap and / or get stuck further down the pipe.

Meh.. I have a septic system and use a garbage disposal on a daily basis. Never had a problem with it. Then again, I don't shove huge quantities of food down it. Only the remnants that are left in dishes after they are scraped into the trash.

Home Depot has a very reasonable solution... I rented a 75 ft. electric sewer snake yesterday to clear her gray water sewer line. The kitchen sink was backing up as well as running out the garage washer drain, so I checked the p trap and the outside clean out. The trap was clear, but water was backed up in the clean out pipe.

You have to pay a deposit ($125), and the rental was about $50 for 4 hour minimum. I returned it in just over an hour. I have used a manual snake before, this was all electric and very simple to use.

Prevented a several hundred dollar plumbing bill, and the plumber would have used a similar device.

The only problem that could happen with a snake is the pipe breaking...this is usually where people get into trouble. Not that the pipe would more than likely fail soon anyway.

Iron pipe? Probably. I have seen that too.
Copper drains? No.
PVC drains? No.

don't put anything in the toilet but toilet paper. No handi wipes, paper towels etc.Toilet paper is biodegradable, that other stuff is not and can build up and clog your sewer pipe.

yes. pvc packed fulll of sludge. the middle there was a hole about the size of a pen all the way down the pipe. thats why all my attempts to unclog it were frivolous. the whole pipe was removed, and the 10ft section weighed about 100lbs

anyone else want to tell me im wrong through their own experiences they havent had?

you can also fit epoxy down a drain

Lots of stories about people losing their houses to foreclosure finding a way to fit lots of cement/concrete down their drains too.

That's not exactly recommended for good drain maintenance though...:whiste:

If you have long sanitary lines to the street, you should dump a bucket of water down each toilet every week, as quickly as they will take it. This will push stuff that the low flow toilets can't.

I just posted a thread on my plumbing issues a week or so ago.

Recap: Been in my house for 2 years, basement drains started backing up. Was able to rent a 1/2" snake machine and clear out roots. Also placed a request with the town to remove the problem tree, as it is on town property.

If you have trees anywhere near your waste lines, remove them.

My wife and I both have lots of long hair so about once every month I buy a bottle of "Thrift" drain cleaner. This is a solid cleaner that is a base and eats all the organics in the pipes. Sounds like a dragon when it's working. Use it in the kitchen sink also to get rid of smelly drain stench.

My house has a main drain line that was destroyed from the previous owners (two generations since the house was built) that swore by weekly Drano treatments with an iron plumbing system.

I have seen PVC drains break during a snakeing procedure esp with the snake just going clean through the side of the pipe and getting stuck in the ground beyond it.

It's very rare, but turns a simple de-clog into a full weekend or more (if you have to dig under the house) of work.

yup. (thanks by the way for being cordial with me, i know we have butted heads in other threads)

its not like pipes really have preventative maintenance that needs to be done, its just about common sense and knowing what can cause problems and what wont.

No idea on pipe maintenance, but funny story from work I overheard.

Geniuses decided to put in waterless urinals way back when. Well, aside from them stinking up the entire bathroom (what happens to stale urine you spray all over a large surface and never flush, duh?) and the fact that they clogged once every few weeks, they corroded the pipes. The lack of flushing allowed a concentrated solution of piss (ammonia?) to get into the pipes, and corroded them.

They just finished reno'ing all washrooms in the building and put in auto-flushing urinals.

wow thats great

those waterless urinals are supposed to be upkept with a chemical solution that dissolves the piss to make it not stink.. but in my experience even if they are properly maintained they still reek.

dont pour grease down them of course. oil isnt as bad but it can mix with other stuff and make sludge too.

otherwise, no. theres really nothing you can do. theyre very resilient as they are.

oh, and if you have a garbage disposal, get rid of it. all they do is turn solid waste into sludge that can clog pipes. its better to just shove solids down the drain with water because every 10ft or so the pipes get bigger, so if it gets past the sink trap it will get past everything.

After a bacon session, I let the bacon drippings congeal and get almost solid in the skillet. I then scrape that goo into the trash. Only a tiny amount goes down the disposal.

It is true most pipes get larger as they leave the drain, but generally from 1.5" all the way up to 4" max in most cases. The rest is just hogwash.
