Home Remedies for a sore throat?

The timing of this thread is just plain odd for me.

I've had a persistent sore throat for 15 days now

We've all had sore throat for a billion different reasons, but this is the first one I've ever had like this. It's not 'death' sore throat (though at night, it certainly hurts pretty bad), but a persistant one that refuses to go away. When it first hit me, it was *really* bad, and I did all the things we do to get rid of a cold (though that Ben/Maalox thing is new to me). The sore throat went away 2 1/2 days later, which followed by an insane amount of congestion. That didn't surprise me...typical for a a bad cold. But here's the thing, the sore throat came back 4 days later, and has never left me . During this time I've had a low-grade fever, headaches, fatigue, etc...all symptoms of a bad virus. The thing is, they've all subsided except for the sore throat. During this time, I've been cultured twice for strep, and both time they've come back negative (they even gave me penicillin to take for about 3-4 in between just in case, but that of course, did not help). So I went back and saw a Nurse Practitioner (my Doc actually left for the week when I was 15 mins late on wednesday :| ). She basically told me there's nothing they can do...and to just wait it out. I swear I'm gonna have a sore throat for the rest of my life. I'm starting to think it may be caused by something other than the virus I had...but I really can't imagine an allergy causing a sore throat to this degree (allergies would cause an 'itchy' throat, not one that is swollen and tender like mine is, right?). Anyway, I was thinking about starting a thread since my doctor's are providing no help...but then I saw this.

Any ideas?

pg19, maybe you have the same thing as me. Is the pain centralized in like, one area of your throat?

Man....lol...I think I do have the exact same thing as you John. I think I have a throat ulcer, but I have no idea for certain

It just kinda hit and I'll explain why:

After I made my last post...my throat (which had been hurting off and on for the most part of two weeks) was getting better. Three days and my throat was feeling good (not perfect, but certainly better). Now I don't smoke ciggs, but I'm a 20 year old college kid, so my throat and lungs see a fair share of weed when I'm healthy. But I hadn't smoked weed for almost a month because of my virus/throat pains, untill just yesterday. I took a couple of bong hits...got high as hell...and woke up today with the right side of my throat killing me. It just feels all bruised and painful. It kinda hit me today that maybe I do have a throat ulcer...it never really felt like a normal sore throat, and I've been cleared of mono/strep. I'm gonna call the doctor again tomorrow and see what the word is when I mention this. I think it came on right as the virus went away, so that's why they assumed it was part of the virus.

Either way, I hope I'm right. Sheesh, hoping for a throat ulcer...life is great!

Who have you been kissing? It sounds a lot like mono.. Are the lymph nodes in your neck swollen?

When I was sick with a bad sore throat, I finally went to the doc... thought I had bad strep.. But it turned out to be mono. They took a culture and blood samples... Told me it was mono.. and to go home and sleep, drink lots of fluid. Blah. Waste of money.. lol

and yeah.. well. At first, when I was pretty sick.. smoking would irritate my throat, but as I was getting over the illness.. I found that smoking a bowl actually helped with the pain...

I'm in the same boat as you guys, except I still have my tonsils and they look simply awful from the infection. Doc has me gargling 4x a day and taking 2000mg of Penicillin a day.

I'm not exactly sure about a home remedy, but Tussin can cure anything.

Well, my throat's almost completely healed (finally!). It still hurts to eat some things, ie french fries for some reason, but I can finally swallow food well enough to get a satisfying meal in. The pain that existed while I wasn't eating, just while I was sitting there, has just about completely gone away.

Bout friggin time!
