My d-link DGL-4300 is flaking out so I'm going to need to replace it. Any suggestions for something modern that is similar? I do a lot of online gaming (Xbox), and streaming video etc and I suppose I'll want gigabit capability, I haven't bought a router in like 6 years so I'm sure the techonology has changed quite a bit.

The tech actually hasnt changed. Packet forwarding/filtering is the same as it has always been. You do not want a gigabit router. You want a 10/100+Wireless N router and a gig E switch.

Why would you replace one network appliance with 2?

I have been using a Dlink DIR-655 for a while now and like it very much
There are newer models out the use the newer N150 or N300 though

I would explain more, but when the level of the technical conversation is based on "Flaky", and "I like it very much", it is hard to know what to address technically.

Like it or not, for some users the only sound solution is to get SOHO Router for few hundreds $$$.

A separate switch usually has better performance than in a router. Support for jumbo frames, etc. Although only techies buy a separate router/switch. Most people want an all-in-one.

DIR-655 is fine, not sure how I feel about their firmware. Some people have issues with the router. You also can't downgrade firmware. If you upgrade to a new version and it has bugs, you are stuck. No opensource firmware, etc.

You can go with Jack's recommendation. Or look at the popular Asus models with lots of RAM and opensource firmware. Also the cisco/linksys models and last I recall everyone was going crazy over the netgear WNDR3700, not sure if that is still the case. Most of these models I listed/all support open source firmware.

I currently have the D-Link DIR 655. (hardware ver A-2) (firmware 1.32 NA)

For Roku Netflix video streaming @ 50-60' downstairs to the Pioneer TV, will the D-Link do the job, or is there a better router out there now for this task? My son and I are also online PC gamers.

Thanks for any input.

i love my WZR - but i just use it as an AP. a gigabit switch for handling traffic, and cruddy uverse RG handles the rest. seems to work great.

the WNDR4000/E4200 are overrated. i get better speeds on 2.4ghz (300mbps) than 5ghz oddly. i tried the above two on 2.4 or 5ghz and went back to the WZR buffalo on 2.4ghz only and have had the highest transfer rates.

WZR is rated at 840~ish mw (tweakable to 1 watt) which is really high power. comes with two directional antennas so you can aim your beam which is why i think it works faster than the omni's that are built into the e4200 linksys

Just bought a DIR-655 and I am sorely disappointed. It was to replace my asus rt-n12 with dd-wrt on it. That Asus was rock solid for an entire year but now I can't get it to work with my wireless card in my desktop. Even downgraded the firmware.

The DIR-655 I am using the latest firmware. Works just fine when it is working. Had it for only 4 days but I have had to reset the router every day. Today, it took 30 minutes for me to pull an IP from my isp after I reset the router. This piece of crap is going back.

I also am trying to figure out what to use. I have 10 wireless devices and do lots of netflix and online gaming.

Right now, the only thing I know for sure is this DIR 655 is going back to newegg.

I've seen decent reviews for the new Linksys Cisco E-series routers. Anybody around here have any experience with them?

I don't. The reviews on Newegg sound like just about every other router out there and they are pricier. I may take the plunge and try one later this week. My DIR-655 froze up twice last night. I thought my days of resetting the router ended years ago.
