Home security camera system recommendation

I need help choosing a home security camera system. I did a search myself and found thousands of systems and hundreds of different brands of systems out there and a lot of them claim they are the best and the reviews are very similar. Just wondering what systems you guys have and do you recommend and not recommend it. I need about 5 cameras, and 8 seems excessive. I would like best quality images with ability to record and send notifications to my phone.

IMO, it seems the majority of consumer security camera brands are just rebranded Dahua systems? It'll say on the box Q-see, Amcrest, Swann, Lorex, etc, but when you start digging into the software, you'll see Dahua.

Best security camera...search "starvis" on Amazon. Definitely the best. Get good cameras. The cameras are the weakest link.
Best security DVR? They're all average. Amcrest has the best, the most powerful, the most intuitive software, but their hardware quality sucks. Their phone app likes to drain battery in the background. At one time, it didn't. Anyhow I recommend getting a HD-TVI system for the best picture quality.

Phone notifications get trip by everything. At night, you'll get hundreds of emails notifying you of bugs. During the day, it's birds and shadows cast by clouds. In the mornings and evenings, it's the quick changes in light levels. Phone notifications can work if disabled at night and set on something large with a even tone...like a pillar.

I'd grab a bunch of starvis cameras, a 8 channel HDTVI DVR, cable, and power adapter to run 8 cameras.

Whatever you get just make sure it is POE. Analog stuff is outdated and the quality stinks.

If you want to roll your own dvr look at Luxriot. For cameras I like Geovision GV-PT series for PZT and just about any of the other bullet or box units they have. I believe all of their offerings are now ONVIF.

I also need a simple setup with 2-3 cameras and recording 24-48 hours. I'll so some searching on the above recommendations. Any links to some bundles on Amazon (or elsewhere) you would recommend?

I have a 4 camera outfit from, Harbor Freight. The first two cameras with monitor cost $175, the next two cameras ran about $140 more (using 20% coupons). The quality is only fair. It has zoom and you can add an SD card to record. You can also use SKYPE to view when away. The night vision is good to about 50 feet. These are cordless, and I had the whole thing installed in about 2 hours.

I figure that just having a camera in obvious positions on the house is about 95% of a deterrent.

i've been using LaView for residentials and businesses.
good price and high quality for their NVR, and 1080p IP cameras with wide dynamic range.
4 cameras plus 8 channel NVR, cables, and 2tb hard drive inside, usually costs $550. can find at homedepot or amazon.

sometimes they are on sale on newegg without hard drive for $300.
easy app to view on phone/table, or log in a computer to see remotely.
