Home Theater Audio (on a budget)

I have a 7.1 capable sound card, and until I can afford a good 7.1 speaker set I was thinking that I would try something cheap.

I have a Logitech 2.1 set (one input), and a Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 set (front & rear inputs)

What if I plugged the 2.1 set into the soundcard's Front speaker out port, the Front speaker cable of the 4.1 set into the second (middle) audio out port, and the Rear Speaker cable into the third (rear) audio out port? I realize I have an extra Sub, but will that cause a problem?

Both sets (2.1 & 4.1) sound fine to my ears, I'm not an audiophile, I'm just trying to get good surround sound for my music, movies & games. I don't expect this to be as good as a 7.1 set from Klipsh, or the Gigaworks set.

My question is basically, will it work, or will the extra SUB cause a problem?

I was thinking about doing that too; using a nice set of 2.0 desktop speakers on the center channel output of the soundcard. I assume it just plays evenly through both speakers so I could place them close together in the top-center of my entertainment center.

pickup a set of logitech x-530s for ~50 bucks and be done with it. they are pretty good sounding for the money and you don't have to worry about matching up speakers or dual subs.

That's good advice.

Do you want me to send you my paypal addy so you can send me the $50, or just my mailing addy so you can have them shipped directly to me to save time?

In all seriousness, I do appreciate your suggestion, but if I had $50 bucks to spend on speakers right now (other things have priority) I wouldn't be posting here looking for ideas on how do do it with what I already have.

eBay has T7700 7.1 (refurbs) for about $55 + shipping

Cambridge Soundworks 4.1 are good speakers.
With 2 subwoofers on the floor sound might get really fat or boomy, but then you can turn one sub down.

You wrote on a budget in your topic. You should just take it out because you don't plan to spend money.

on a budget doesn't mean "i'm not willing to spend any money." mixing and matching speakers usually comes out sounding off, but if you're not willing to put out any money you probably won't care. 7.1 with two sets of speakers like this isn't really going to net you much over the 4.1 cambridge speakers you have now. also the way the outputs are wired may or may not work with what you're trying to do.

i love my 4.1's - I have the FPS 2000 digital version hooked up to a Hercules Gametheater XP. Old speakers, but they still sound great. I doubt they'll be going anywhere anytime soon, as I have no budget
