im kind of new to this...but was wondering whats the best reciever, cd player, and tape deck to get and what speakers to go w/ it....

i don't want something very expensive, i guess you could say it'll be a budget system...mostly for music and movies

also need a combo vhs/dvd player

oh and if someone could explain how these parts all work together that'd be great!

You are not going to get any "Best" HT equipment with a budget of $400 for a HTIB, Tape Deck, and Combo DVD\VHS

On a serious note - Ultimate Electronics (if you have one of them near you) advertised a somewhat decent Yamaha HTIB box for $300. It includes a stand alone receiver which isn't a terrible receiver, a 6" powered sub, a center channel, and then 4 other small speakers to set up for fronts and rears. Purchase that, and then like a DVD/VHS combo from a company like Panasonic or Samsung for around $120-$130 and that is an "okay" setup.

You could hit a pawn shop and find a ton of tape decks in the $15-$25 range. Just pick up the cleanest looking one.

It's not exactly a system to be proud of, but the stand alone receiver in the Yamaha setup will give you decent room for upgrade in the future when you want to upgrade your speakers.

Onkyo makes a couple of HTIB's in that price range... excellent for the price (IMHO). At one point, one of their models became so popular it was back-ordered for about 1-2 months.

go to fatwallet and search onkyo you will see the deals. I second onkyo as a vote..everyone who has them love 'em. good price/performance ratio. you need to add a dvd($100) player and tape deck($30-50)

onkyo at least used to make good stuff. my father has an older system that's mostly onkyo and sounds good, and i used to have some onkyo headphones that were nice. they seem to be maintaining their reputation.

R.I.P. onkyo headphones. blew them out feeding them too much power in a recording session.
