WTF do all you rich bastards do? (And can I have a job? )

Poor student special:

19" Trinitron monitor
Creative 16x DVD

Sony 500 Watt receiver
5.0 (no sub yet) SCE speaker setup (they actually sound pretty sweet when watching movies).

Swan Diva 4.1/R3 combo.
Denon 1802 Receiver
XBox as source =\
and a POS old 19" color toshiba TV from like... 1985 or something I don't know.. saving up for a Toshiba 40H80, otherwise I would have gotten like a 32" Sharp Flat-screen TV

People come into my room and ask why isn't my monitor the TV (21" Trinitron). Well, because I'm a poor student and can't afford a TV yet =P

I made the screen out of a plastic material from a company Called Parkland Plastics. Depending on where you live you can find it at lowes or home depot (midwest). But you can also mail order directly from teh company. The sheet was like 15 bucks and it makes a very nice screen. I really didnt want to drop 1k for a good widescreen screen. This method was recommended by the good folks over on the AVSForum if you want to go digging there for more info.

BTW you want the polywall stuff

My system (don't remember a lot of the model #s offhand):

Toshiba 27" standard CRT TV. It's a decent model, it has component inputs.
Toshiba progressive scan DVD player (I got prog-scan for my "future TV" ).
Sharp Hi-Fi VCR (never gets used).
Panasonic Showstopper (ReplayTV).
Yamaha RX-V493 receiver.
Some tiny Sony center channel speaker.
Boston Acoustics VR950 main speakers.
Boston Acoustics CR8 rear speakers.
M&K 12" subwoofer.

I think my system sounds pretty good right now, I have gotten a lot of value for my money overall.
Obviously, I need a new center channel speaker, I'll probably be getting the Boston Acoustics VR910 for Christmas (come on Santa). I also need a new receiver, the Yamaha I have is old and only "digital-ready" with the 5.1 analog inputs, no digital inputs of any kind. I'll probably sell it on eBay and get a Denon AVR-1803. Of course, then I'll need a rear center channel...
Long-term I want a bigger and better TV (who doesn't?) but apartment living dictates something smaller.
Sometimes I think "what if I had never bought any home theater stuff, imagine how much money I'd have saved" but a guy's gotta have his toys.

32" TV
JVC CD player (it's about 6 or 7 years old, don't remember model #)
Denon 2802 Reciever
HT PC with digital coax audio out
DIY 3-ways for mains, 2 ways for surrounds and center (I haven't heard anything under $2000 that even compares)
DIY 12" Shiva Sonotube (-3 dB @ 20 Hz) with 180w amp

I just got done building my speakers and that will probably be my last major upgrade for a while. Eventually a projector will replace the TV, but I'm waiting for prices to go down and my finances to go up.

I'll try to go through it:
Pioneer Dolby Pro-Logic Reciever. 120 watts per channel. 70 center, 30 rears. About 10 years old.
Pioneer Elite DVD Player. Forget the model, but it was a floor model I got for half price for $500.
Sony 32" Wega XBR
Center: Infinity - Video one
Left/Right: Infinity: SM-125
Rears: Inifinty: SM-65

The infinities are older.,so you can't find them on the web site. I can probably figure out hte new model names if you request. Using component hook ups from the DVD to TV. No pics, sorry

That is correct I know, it's pathetic. The room it's in doesn't really suit a home theater, so I've stopped upgrading till I get into a new, larger home. A new recevier (considering a Harmon Kardon) is about 5 years out. Might sell all the speakers at that time too and get new ones.

Toshiba 50H82 50" 16:9
Toshiba SD4800 DVD
H/K AVR 520 Receiver
4 JBL S26 II's for front and rear
JBL S Center II
Sony SA-WM40 (Great sub for the price........just add some polyfill)
HD Directv Receiver - soon to be purchased

The JBL speakers turned out to sound really well for what they cost. I may upgrade the sub sometime soon but you can't beat $143 for a sub that sounds as good as a lot of $500 subs.
