home video editing: what's the "best" software?

(for home video editing)

I'm currently using Pinnacle Studio, but I'm wondering if another app is better? So, anybody have any opinions? What editing software do you use? Do you like it?

How's? Adobe Premiere? How are the video editing apps from Ulead and Sonic Foundry?

Just trying to get an idea of what people like/dislike.

I use Premiere 6.0.
It's very good, lots of effects and filters/tricks to do with it.
I do have an Matrox RT2500 firewire card and breakout cable which adds more effects for real time rendering, but without it, Premiere is the program that I use,and I do like it.

Is Premiere difficult to use? I mean, I like a program where if I want to make a "simple" video, well, it's relatively easy to do, and on the other hand, if I want to get fancy with a video, well, the app has the power to do what I want, but it may be a little more complicated (which I don't mind). I just don't want a simple video to require hours of my time.

So, does Premiere fit that description?

I use Premiere 6 and VegasVideo 3.

hmmm... the "best" if you want something very powerfull (home users don't really need this) is Final Cut Pro 3. The "best" consumer editor it iMovie.

Notice both are for mac only. Mac also has a complete solution, with iDVD or DVD studio pro, so that you can burn them with the mac's superdrive.

Making movies and burning them on dvds is childsplay on a mac if you use the consumer stuff. It gets pretty challenging with the pro tools but they are very powerfull. Check out apple's website to learn more about FCP.

On the PC side of things I'd say AVID Express DV 3.0. Premiere is 2nd, and about half as much. Premiere does have a relatively high learning curve. You can't just "hop on" to Premiere anymore than you can Photoshop or After Effects. But for what you want Premiere might be over kill. I've heard people say good things 'bout Vegas Video, but I've never used it before.

Vegas Video 3 by Sonic Foundry.

Straightforward and excellent audio to boot.

if you're gonna do real stuff i'd say premiere, but if you're just messing around with simple projects maybe the other ones listed would be better (i've never personally used them myself though).

hands down across platforms though is final cut pro, almost makes me wish i had a mac.

Another vote for premier. It takes perhaps a little bit more time to learn but once you know how to use it the feedback is great.

A friend accross the hall here has Final cut Pro 3 and it seriously puts Premiere to shame...If i can say that(Premiere is still VERY VERY GOOD)

The interface is great, and he is making the greatest vids I have ever seen....
