Homedepot Paint - Behr vs Glidden

I just completed an addition to the house and I have to get an off-white color topcoat to go on my PVA primed interior walls. I am looking at getting paint from homedepot and I am having a hard time deciding between Behr and Glidden paint. I did a little research online and found a lot of old posts regarding the paints, but I know the formulation of the paints has changed and I need an up to date comparison. So specifically, I am looking at the Behr Ultra line, since the Marquee is too expensive and seem excessive. On the Glidden side, I am looking at the Diamond line, which is the top of the line for Glidden at HD. So has any of you used one of these HD paint recently and how was your experience with the paint? Any recommendation/information is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I ended up using Behr's Ultra and Marquee line for my most recent paint jobs.

Ultra was pretty true to color in their samples, with the Marquee it look us a few samples since their chips were not true to color. However, their finishes are fantastic and totally on point. Once I settled on a color and got it on the walls I haven't had to touch it since.

Home Depot does let you buy paint pot samples, so if you're dubious about a color then get the sample and try it out.

Any particular reason to use Home Depot? We've generally gotten better results from Sherwin Williams (usually with a 40% off sale) or PPG. Bonus points to PPG for selling TWP stain

Sherwin Williams for me. Better quality paint and prices are fine when you have a 30 or 40 % off. Their high-end paints are some of the best, like the pro classic enamel.

I second Sherman Williams. HD paints are too hit or miss.
I did have great results with a contractor grade HD paint. I can't remember the name but it was a plain white can with blue lettering.

Reason I am going with HD is because of price and accessibility. I am a Pro Xtra member so I get 20% off on paints. I am heavily leaning on the Glidden because of the No VOC and Odor free, its better for me and the family. I did stop by PPG a week ago and purchased a gallon of matching paint, and their price is ridiculous comparing to HD, luckily the worker hooked me up with an account discount, but I am not sure if I will be that lucky again next time when I need to buy in bulk (between 5-10 gal).

Really? I wonder they vary a lot by region. When I priced out PPG near us they were cheaper than SW even after a 40% discount and basically the same price as Behr Premium Plus (which I think is only a couple $ more than Glidden?) Or maybe PPG was having a sale. Only used them once but generally liked the paint

I use the samples all the time and spread it over a piece of wall. Then I let it dry and see the paint color at noon and at night with a light to see how it looks.

Possible, I don't find Sherman Williams more expensive than bher premium its like pocket change more expensive.

We started out liking Benjamin Moore paints but then moved to Sherwin Williams. Better coverage and performance when painting. One coat sometimes will do the trick whereas lesser paints will need 2 coats. The local SW dealer around here even will mix colors for us out of Ben Moore's color samples and, they always release coupons. Got a few gallons 4 months ago at 33% off.

Just sort of have been thru this.

Paint manufacturers necessarily have to modify their formulations every few years due to EPA as well as new state regulations as well as supposed chemistry improvements. This seems to happen every three or four years. In addition, the personality of any distributor is unique to the location. So pricing & competency (with regard to selection, mixing, supplies, support, etc.) can vary widely.

IMO this is part of why it is so difficult to make any definitive determination as the reports from different users (brands of paints) vary and seemingly contradict.

At some point one has to make a decision.

So buy from one of the top brand paints from one of the large dealers you like/get along with. If your gonna hang on to an outside paint job for a long time, then ensure that you will be able to get matching paint if/when touch up becomes required. You'd be surprised what happens after 5 or 6 years when you go back to a paint store to try to buy the same paint again to match.

I am having to paint a couple of houses again and ran across this thread. I am eligible for the Home Depot Pro Xtra 20% off paint discount but prefer to use SW or PP paints from their stores. Can someone please pm me with a 40 + % off contractor account code for SW or PPG. - Thanks

I don't think so but there are some painting contractors out there who will let you use their account # for cash purchases .It benefits them keep their volume buying power up - better discounts . I had this info from one of them while back but lost the #.

I forgot to mention that I recently noticed that Home Deport sells another line of paint now called -
PPG Timeless . I have no idea which PPG store line it compares to .

Just did our entire kitchen and bathroom with Sherwin Williams. I don't think I'll use anything else. Smooth, rolls on well, and covered in 1 coat. Looks beautiful.

I voted Glidden! I’ve used both Behr Marquee and Glidden Diamond (now called PPG Diamond). Yes, both really hides equally well. But overall, I was truly impressed by how smooth and easy it was to apply Glidden Diamond. It “glided” on my walls as l applied it. Also, it had zero VOC which is linked to paint smells that can give people headaches or breathing difficulties. Plus Glidden Diamond was the better price!
Behr Marquee was more difficult to apply as it felt too thick on application, it also dried up too fast and had a stronger and more noticeable paint smell. Marquee was more effort to apply and it wasn’t worth the additional over payment in comparison to Diamond.
BTW, If you’re going buy your paint at Home Depot, I highly recommend signing up for their Pro-Xtra rewards program!
