Homes that are just a front door next to a garage door....fugly?

Vinyl siding is pretty common here in the midwest. It sure beats having to paint your home every 8-10 years and/or replace siding. I'll probably go with it in the next few years myself.

I greatly prefer concrete siding. It helps with noise and efficiency of the home.

Neither. Urban sprawl needs to go away.

Blech. Maybe, *maybe*, I'd consider living somewhere like that if they actually did a decent job of noiseproofing that place and adding in natural light. I like to be surrounded by trees. I grew up on 27 acres and most of it was densely wooded. If I win the lottery I'm buying land in blocks of hundreds or thousands of acres.

Give me something like this:

Garages look best when they're not front-facing IMO. My ideal house would be something like a 2-story Craftsman, 4bd/2.5ba, 2-car garage off to the side. Basically this:

That's not really craftsman. A couple details are close (proportions are off), but overall more accurately: semi-traditional/eclectic

to answer the original question:

Context matters. It can work, but generally in modern structures, in semi-urban areas.

Cruddy tract homes are pretty low on quality in general, I don't think it's the garage position that's the biggest thing I wish they'd address.

The problem is one's dwelling is a product of their location and wealth.

A sprawling homestead with a 3 car detached garage with a covered walkway to a 5/5 home in BFE is going to run the same price as a small condo on the best blocks of NYC.

I'd love a bunch of property with a modest house (3 bedrooms, 3 baths, an office (perhaps detached)) and a 2.5+ car attached garage along with a detached 3.5+ two story car garage and pool/natural area/Jacuzzi. It the places I can afford that, I couldn't probably get a job to pay the note on it.

I said meh. It is ugly but in lower end houses that is how it is. If possible at least turn it ninety degrees.

That was really common in ranch style tract houses in California in the 1950s and early 1960s. I kind of like the way they look.

wow 20/20/20 split!

my opinion, a beatuful self crafted home from the turn of the century would be extremely expensive to build nowadays. so we are left with paper thin cookie cutter homes that at best, have a facade on the front only.

if the trend continues, well all live in metal corrugated boxes with a nice fake two story tudor revival painted wall on the front, like some sort of hollywood fake home

Here is the house I'm building. I wanted to go with a side load garage but it messed with the dimensions of the room above the garage, which i really wanted to be big. I also think making the garage a side load would've had the left side of the house sticking too far out compared to the right side. The should plan I had originally had a 2 car garage.

personal taste, the tan peaked roof could have been removed anx then leave main building as hipped with maybe two dormer lights
