It boils down to this two. Fit starts at $15.5K and Mazda at $14.7K.

Fuel economy and everyday commute car is what I'm after. My AMG and Rav4 is killing me with their crappy gas mileage

I would go with the Fit or Versa Note. I wouldn't want to go without a CVT after having them.

How could anyone in their right mind choose the Mazda2 over the Fit?

The two are priced pretty similarly (fit starts at 15,525 while Mazda2 starts at 14,720), but the Fit has double the cargo capacity, a 20% better power to weight ratio, and more standard features, such as integrated Bluetooth and steering wheel mounted audio controls.

The base Mazda2 doesn't even have cruise control!

As far as MPG goes, the Mazda2 is rated for 29/35 with the 5-speed and worse with the automatic. The Fit is rated for 29/37 with the 6-speed and 33/41 with the CVT. Not even close.

See above. Fit. No contest. The mazda 2 is the answer to a question that no one asked. Having said that if you start to option the fit up too much I would say you're better off with a base mazda 3 or vw golf.

My girlfriend has a 2009 fit sport, 5 speed. Great car all around. She averages 36-38 mpg mostly highway and it's really fun to drive. Test drive both.

The Mazda 2 is about to be replaced, partly why the fit is currently a better car. Not sure exactly when the new 2 launches here.

Was based on the ford fiesta, also a decent choice here and you might get some deals on them.

Fit owns this segment. It's one of the most functional little cars you can buy. It's reliable, economy is better than the window sticker and you've got Honda resale behind it to use it for as long as you need and then sell it for a much smaller loss than a Mazda would give you.

The 2015 Fit is pretty awesome. I still like my 2014 Fiesta better for drive train and definitely fit and finish. But the Fit is the more flexible vehicle is cargo is a major concern.

On my way to the dealer(s) for the Fit. Hoping for a good deal.

If by good deal you mean paying very close to MSRP, then you'll be okay. Dealers don't have to discount this car to sell it and most don't at all.

Through car buying services like USAA, Costco, etc. you might save a 100 or little more at best.

I have driven both and owned a 2011 Fit...

The Mazda2 is a LOT more fun to drive compared to the 2nd gen Fit. I am guessing it is still more fun than the new 2015 Fit, because people are not raving about how it drives compared to the last gen. Other than that the Mazda2 can't compete with the Fit. It is no contest.

The fit is a freaking TARDIS (bigger on the inside). There is nothing else in the class (sub-compact) that comes close if you want the most cargo capacity and rear passenger legroom. My only complaints with the Fit was the poor AC, gutless motor (even with a stick), and getting blown around on the highway.

If you are looking at manuals, add the Ford Fiesta SE 1.0L Ecoboost to your list. People are getting @38mpg on fuelly, and raving about the pep and fuel economy of the little ecoboost motor. Just make sure you are looking at a 1.0L. They are rare on dealer lots, and they only come in SE/stick.

The Fit is Honda doing what it does best. Small, simple, over-engineered, rewarding, bullet-proof. Honda has certainly strayed from their strengths with oddities like the Crosstour and Ridgeline, but the Fit is an example of how Honda earned their reputation.

As much as I want an Accord Plug-In, the Fit will probably be my next daily driver. I'm not sure you can get more car for the money.

I'd go with the Fit myself as I've had good experience with Honda in the past. Though Mazdas aren't bad either.

Have you looked at the Yaris and Fiesta?

Drove a Mazda 2 ZipCar once (2013, 2014 model?) and it was zippier and more fun around the city than a Fit rental car I had.

Doesn't the new Mazda2 still have a gutless 100hp engine? I was in a 2011 Mazda2 and it had to be revved quite often just in normal driving. Not that the new Fit is much faster, but it does have a better power to weight ratio.

Imagine if Honda made a Fit Si with the 205hp K24 out of the Civic Si. It would be a blast to drive I'm sure. The K24 would certainly fit in the engine bay and is a swap that's pretty popular in the aftermarket.
