I absolutely LOVE my Mazda 2. As far as econoboxes go, this is definitely the better driver's car. Mine is a 5 speed, by the way.

I'm not sure why the Fit is always compared to the 2. The Fit is significantly bigger; it's closer the the Mazda 3 in size than the 2.

I paid $7800 for my 2011 Mazda 2 with 50k miles back in December of 2013.

This is the Sport trim version. Since then I added the center console armrest, window tinting and replaced the factory antenna with a stubby antenna. I plan on replacing the factory stereo (and speakers) with Apple CarPlay unit soon. Bluetooth is factory installed but not recommended for playing music. It truncate the frequencies and make the audio sound like AM quality.

I used it mainly for driving around the city, short errands and to work.

So the Hyundai Accent hatch, Kia Rio hatch, and Kia Soul are just chopped liver compared to the Fit and Fiesta? (The Soul won't get that kind of gas mileage.)

I went shopping for these two when their redesigns hit the lots. The problem was they were only churning out absolute base models (the 15K strippers) and I wanted a loaded model so I could get at least some of the features the Fiesta offered. I was talked it would be several months to get them, and apparently Kia/Hyundai are take it as you get it manufacturers, you don't get to just order one the way you want it.

Owned 2007 Fit Sport 5AT for 4yrs.. Still miss the car sometimes hahah The new Fit seems so nice but you prob saved a lot of money going with the Mazda.. Congrats!!

Could you elaborate as to why? I still have my Mazda 2, and while I still think it's a fantastic econobox, I'm starting to think about getting a "fun" car of sorts. I'm curious as to what made you pick a Civic, coming from a Mazda 2.

I just bought a 2013 ford focus hatch 5 speed after looking in this segment. The mazda2/fiesta basically the same car were ruled out because the rear seats don't fold flat, deal breaker for me. The honda was ruled out because of the honda markup and fuel mileage not being very impressive for it's low power 27/33mpg. The focus has 40hp more and gets better mileage 26/36.

Could you elaborate as to why? I still have my Mazda 2, and while I still think it's a fantastic econobox, I'm starting to think about getting a "fun" car of sorts. I'm curious as to what made you pick a Civic, coming from a Mazda 2.

The very main reason is I changed jobs from a commute of 10 miles to 65 miles. This car is not exactly recommended for very long drive with no cruise control (Touring has this feature) and very basic sound system. Initially I was set to get Mazda 3 then I found out it doesn't have Apple CarPlay and then Civic won Car of the Year. I think the Civic will give me gas economy and the best value in the long run. It took me about two months to make this decision. The electronics toys in the Civic is just much more compelling for me.

Excellent gas mileage. Small fuel tank though.

I was shopping in the same price segment mid-2015. Mazda 2 didn't exist in the US at that point.

Checked out the Fit, realized it was designed for short people. Checked out the Cruze/Spark, realized they were designed for even shorter people. Versa Note and Mirage were non-starters based on reviews. Tried to get a Golf in my price range, but wanted an auto. VW says NOPE. Looked at the Fiesta, probably should have looked harder, but it just didn't appeal to me for some reason (probably because I couldn't get the Ecoboost. lol).

Checked out the Soul Base, very roomy. Also under-powered for highway merging/passing for my taste. Didn't try the Soul+, but probably would have been better. Tried to get the dealer to come down a bit on a Juke, dealer said "nope, you pay sticker or don't pay at all", so I walked. Ended up with an Accent Sport (interior alone is worth the price difference from the base model). Getting ~30MPG per tank (roughly 60/40 hwy/city). I would say the Accent is arguably one of the best values in the price range.

So far (since June-ish when I got it), my only regret with the Accent Sport is that it's not a Juke. lol

I have driven the Soul Base and Soul +, I didn't notice that much of a difference, either on freeway or in the city. Both seemed under-powered. I bought the Base.

However, I'm a fairly conservative driver and most of my driving is on the freeway during rush hour, typically between 30-50 MPH (70 is only on a good day..lol), so it didn't really make a difference for me.

The only time I've run into a problem with it is during a trip to rural PA, it really didn't like the hills / mountains.

I'm very regularly getting 38 mpg. I get 35 if I drive it like I stole it, 40 if I try hard to conserve fuel, and 38 if I just drive without thinking about it. I have the 5 speed touring model and I'm at 85k miles on mine.

But yes, it has a very small tank. Fill ups are frequent, but cheap. It's pretty satisfying to fill up a gas tank for $14 with today's prices, even though we know it's because it only takes 7.5 gallons (I believe it's an 8.5 gallon tank). Haha
