I'm rather surprised that Jeep did so well. Anyway, makes me all that much happier that I just bought a Honda.

i had a 91 civic. the oil filter may not be well-placed, but what about the:

spark plugs, cap, rotor and wires
fuel filter
transmission drain
battery
air filter

that are so well-placed?

I buy North American cars. round here anyway Japanese is still a lot more money at initial purchase.
I'll do some of my own work and parts are cheaper and more available everywhere.
I don't worry about resale, when I buy vehicles we are looking at min 8 yrs ownership.
Finally as the article pointed out American cars don't top the list but they aren't at the bottom either and the gap is closing.
I have nothing against Japanese vehicles, but other than Resale I don't think the cost/benefits favor them.
I did onw two of them though
72 toyota and a 95 civic

According to the commercials here on the radio, BMW has the best retained/resale value. Odd.

Edit: Oh I see, there is very fine difference between them.

Honda cars are rock solid, and Honda doesn't need high incentives to sell their cars.

Yeah, its CRAZY. My housemate just bought a brand new '04 Trailblazer EXT with a crapload of options. List price was $34k. He paid $26k after tags and taxes:Q

If you could put up with GM's cheapo interiors, boring designs, sloppily built cars and trucks, you can walk out of dealership with a "great deal"

The interior is cheap, but I will say this. It is VERY comfortable (even in the third row), has plenty of room all around, is smooth and quiet, and rides nicely and has auto 4x4. And it's not that bad on gas.

If you don't ask for a lot, it's quite a good machine.

If GM keeps flooding the market with high incentives, the used cars aren't going to hold their values, since you can get a brand new Malibu for cheap anyway, why buy used. There is also an image problem with cars with high incentives, it means the cars aren't worth their values, even if those cars are reliable. It's a vicious cycle, GM and the buyers are the losers in the end. Build the cars people want to buy and they will come.
