Nothing in particular, just an overall summary of your "likes" and "dislikes" I guess.
My experience with Morocco:
Likes:
-A truly unique third-world experience. They literally live in straws & clay-houses. You can scrape the walls with your nail.
-Amazing living condition disparity. You shop in dirt field souks (street market), a 10 min walk later, you are also in 5-star shopping district with marble floor. The same Moroccans live in both conditions.
-A true Anthony Bourdain-esque experience if you drive just 15 minutes outside of Marrakech. They live simple village life in the desert- mud houses with satellite dishes on top. They barely have running water, do laundry in streams, and bathing is a luxury.
-The desert beauty & the oasis towns are spectacular. The vast deserts are very similar to Nevada. Once you hit the Saharan sand dunes, it's game over.
Dislikes:
-Marrakech doesn't seem to have violent crime. However ALL fvcking locals and shopkeepers are VERY aggressive to get $$ from you. It takes a certain skin to stomach them at first. My wife was taken back at first day in the thick of it. Now, I can be aggressive as fvck too. Walk with a purpose, learn to strongly say no, wear a frown on your face, and go on.
-They ALWAYS AIM to rip you off or ask for money. Every. Single. Fvcking. Minute. The moment you land in airport, the airport taxi operate together like a cartel and overcharge the ride to the city at 100 dirhams (usually 20-40). You gotta learn to walk away. They WILL 100% give you a counter offer (which is still shitty). The only after I walked to the street (100 yds), I got an fair price (60 dirham).
-Don't be fvcking stupid to hop inside a cab without confirming the price. If you sit inside first without saying anything, you are AT THEIR MERCY. They can charge 100-300 dirhams ($25-75) whatever they fvck they want.
Everything shitty I read online about Marrakech came true- I asked for their popular orange juice at the souk. He said it was 5 dirhams, I said 3. He said no. I turned my back. He called for me and said 4. I insisted on 3, he obliged. I paid with the 5 dirham coin. The bastard serves me OJ and gives me 1 dirham back, LOL. I frowned and said, 'come on man, I'm not dumb'. Only then he gave me the remaining change. Now it's not about money or the god damn 1 dirham (25 cents), they'll take advantage of you at all costs.
-I LOVE doing people photography- wherever I travel. I took nearly zero in Morocco. They ALL ask for money. Every single fvcking time. From kids to adults to 5-star personnel.
-We REALLY got tired of this by the last day on Morocco. It's not a mentally relaxing city. This whole experience is emotionally taxing but tolerable. But by the end, we just wanted to get the hell out.
Thank god I read about all this online in advance (wikitravel, google). Otherwise I would've been very poorly prepared.
