Hooking up htpc to plasma tv

Threw together a box to use as a htpc from some parts laying around & hooked it up to hdmi2 on my shiny new Panny plasma. Seems to run just fine, but I'm getting lots of "noise" on the picture. Snow... lines... flashing on & off. Vid card is an HD4850. Cable is relatively new dvi>hdmi from newegg... good quality & worked fine on a PC monitor for several weeks before being retasked here.
Am I missing something? A setting somewhere in Vista? Refresh rate tuning?

Thanks in advance.

Yup, it's a Viera TH-46PZ80U. Sending 1920x1080 from the vid card. This is my first experience with hooking a pc to a tv, so it's likely something dumb I'm missing.

Hmm, I found a 30hz interlaced setting under advanced... it seems to like that MUCH better. is it safe to assume that setting won't hurt the tv?

Use what looks best I guess. Were you trying 1920x1080 @ 60Hz progressive before?

Id it's working, I don't know why it would be unsafe to use. Anyone know why it would be?

Yeah, it was 60Hz before. Vista seems content at this 30Hz interlaced setting. XBMC doesn't seem to get it tho. Seems to be trying to run at the 60Hz refresh rate, in spite of whatever changes I make to it's settings. It also only ran in windowed mode once, it always loads full screen now. But hey, this is half the fun... tinkering to get it where we want it, right?

I like tinkering with some things, but this kind of stuff would just be annoying to me

Not sure what's happening but on my Sony SXRD it will only accept 1080i over its hdmi although it's a 1080p display. Try playing with some of the settings in the ATI control panel.

If the TV is set to receive a video signal instead of a PC signal, then that could cause some quality issues.

DVI > VGA produces a very nice, high quality 1080P picture on my plasma display on my Nvidia system. The display didn't like the DVI > HDMI handshake with my ATI system though & never did produce the visual quality to meet my visual requirements.

If you can, try another cable. Snow on an hdmi connection is usually an error on on of the major data pins on the hdmi. I have seen lots of video issues with hdmi in CE gear and its usually the cable or the device(I hate old cable boxes, and random updates to those boxes).

What resolution was the PC monitor that the cable was working with previously?

I know that tv can accept 1920x1080 @ 60hz over hdmi.

Do you have any other hdmi sources to test out the tv?

djnsmith7, what plasma do you have that accepts 1080p over vga?
