Im a game freak and I need it too look really good. I dont expect it to be as good as CRT monitor but close.

I have a friend with Xbox that has it hooked up thru HD output and it looks really good. Would my PC with ATI 9600pro look any better???

I was looking at the back of this SOny big screen

and i was wondering if the video plug up top is the one I need the TV to have or would it be a regular VGA...I know S video doesnt work to well.

Also what would I have to do to my video card as far as settings go....anything special? What kind of resolution these new HD tvs put out....what does 1060i translate to???

Also am I better off getting a projector? then a big screen HD?

These Sonys look good and they are cheap!!! 1600 for 51"

I'm looking to do the same thing. You prolly mean 1080i and i'm pretty sure its 1920x1080, but 1080i is interlaced, so unless the tv you are looking at can handle computer resolutions or 1080p, then you need to use something less. There are forums full of people who have very strong opinions about what TV is best and what style has the best performance (www.avsforums.com). Unless you have a way to darken your room with heavy curtains or something, a projector might not be a good solution. It does allow you to have really big projections, but at the price of brightness. I myself am looking to get one of the LCD or DLP rear projection TVs. The sony one is pretty good and the panasonic one is fairly cheap compared to others. The samsung DLP is also a sweet set. You just have to make sure that it can do what you want. Some TV's have a VGA connector. Most projectors have computer inputs.

Hope that helps some.

On almost any CRT-type rear projection TV, even using a DVI connector your tubes are only capable of 640x480, or in widescreen 852x480. If you start looking at a LCD or DLP variety then you will get into the 1280x720 category (widescreen of course). There are a couple of new technologies, one being LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) that can reproduce 1920x1080 progressive (like a computer monitor) but if cost is a factor these technologies may be prohibitively expensive. Sorry I am just a guy who can't decide whether he wants to be a computer enthusiast or an AV enthusiast, oh well I'll just be both.

EDIT: SPELLING

Thats incorrect. In fact, with HDCP, DVI may be the only way to get HD to display in full resolution(if the MPAA had its way). You may need 9" tubes to display true 1080p, but you certainly aren't limited to 480p with RPTV's.

Like the previous poster mentioned, AVS forum is where you should be getting your info.

Hence the term "almost any" rear projection tv. And I was actually referring to currently available consumer-level RPTV's that he had seen on the net, at this time i do not know of any that can even reproduce 720p natively.

Avsforum has all your answers. If you have any HD-Ready RPTV, you'll be able to display a 480p or 1080i signal with a ~$100 VGA to Component transcoder and Powerstrip. I would suggest getting a 720p capable set though for more flexibility.
