Each year, in spite of integration, the school's white students had raised money for their own unofficial prom and black students did the same to throw their own separate party,

sounds to me like that door was swinging both ways....let's not forget racism is not a "whites only" club.

My high school was 98% white and we still had rap music almost the entire time. Compared to the piercing screams during "Livin' on a Prayer" the rap was tolerable. Welcome to the America and pop culture.

Did it? Perhaps one of those groups(I'd assume Blacks) had their own simply because if they wanted a Prom they had to make their own.

In truth, many, many southern High Schools are like this. They basically make the prom a non-school sponsored function, and the students themselves raise the funds to rent the hall. There's always a "white prom" and a "black prom." I guess there's nothing stopping a "gay prom," "Hispanic prom," etc, other than just numbers.

They did this year and still whites had their own "prom". Maybe that will change. But I was born in GA and racism is still strong there.

Uhh what are they supposed to do when white kids have a white prom? The article says that blacks outnumber whites at the integrated prom, and white kids are still holding a white prom. Wtf does that tell you?
