This is the worst piece of software and idea in general ever written. Forcing milllons of players use it and not test each release thoroughtly. The most unprofessional approach I have ever seen in my entire life. Just think about it, because of one bad release many teams lost points on different ladders because it took steam gazillion hours to update.
ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

FWIW, I agree Steam is terrible and forced me to stop playing CS for good. Everytime I seemed to connect I had to wait 5-10 minutes whilst it downloaded the most recent updates. Hopefully by the time HL2 comes about Steam should have matured a little.

Steam is an amazing concept that had several bumps on the way out. Much like every major release of a software product has bumps (hello anyone in the corporate world). But bleh, this has been rehashed a million times.

What pisses me off most about Steam is not the rough start it got off to. While I consider it inexcusable, the gaming market has been taking non-working crap software and waiting for the patch to heart, so its pretty much a de facto standard procedure now.

What I hate is that it has been a complete failure to do anything they said it would!!

The shield glitch/hack... THREE WEEKS to fix.
Aimbots and wallhackers are everywhere.
Servers crash and dump all the players.
The game crashes constantly

The whole point of Steam was "look this will take all the hassle out of us distributing our fixes, so now we can focus on cranking them out".

Thank you Buddha. That was exactly the point I was trying to make. What pissed me off the most is there were CAL matches yesterday, and exactly yesterday steam had to have a problem that caused all matches to be postponed which is a great hassle.

You won't know if it is a failure until a year from now. When the benefits of a solid system have been in place and working correctly for a long enough period of time to allow the developers to work on other issues. Right now a lot MORE effort is being put in place to get the steam system solid.

The idea of Steam is to be able to get the technology working quickly and efficiently. What's the point of creating a "time-saving technology," if you have to spend time and money working on it... The idea is that it would allow developers to work on the software, rather than the distribution of the software... Total failure...
