OP's boss is reading this thread trying to figure out a way to screw him.

OP - I like the idea of asking about your future / where things are going, etc. as a way to force the hand. I feel like no matter how much of a dipshit he is, if it's just you two in a room and your asking questions about the future, how does he NOT tell you about the layoff?

Unless you're not the only one and he doesn't want other people to freak out. But even so.

I asked that - since I don't have any work right now and am bored, what are my options moving forward? Train me on the following......?

Response: I'll ask around to see who has any additional work.

I then asked for Monday and Tuesday off and was told Monday won't work.

The boss then proceeded to leave the office and most likely went to his car to call HR. At no point has he spoken to any other staff regarding the amount of work they have.

And I am the only one being let go. I am amazed at how he kept acting like nothing is going on. More proof that he is spineless and not someone you want to work for.

He probably has to do it for security reasons if you have access to anything. There is a reason these things are planned out, to limit any liabilities they can.

Either way, it will work out. Just get some patience man!

I don't have access to anything other than my emails. So no chance I can mess with anything.
I am going to a competitor Monday. If I were to tell him that, I would be escorted out within moments. Standard practice.
So if they can shut things down quickly in that situation, they can shut things down quickly now.

Call in sick Monday and every day after that until they mail you the severance. Bet he'd prefer telling you the news over the phone anyway.

That would be interesting...
I'm bringing this to a conclusion tomorrow no matter what. Even if it comes down to me mentioning that I know he has a severance in his possession because i was the one that signed for it with UPS.
Hell, had it not been for that, I would be at home right now making beer.

If you needed to, could you start the new job Tuesday? Or worried about starting off on the wrong foot?

I hate to say it but I think you're going to get screwed out of the severance and what comes with it. Is there any way your boss got wind of your intentions? It would be brownie points for him to save the company some bucks.

Yeah, I agree. I think you're screwed Uppsala unless you insist that you need Monday off and even then, you still may be screwed.

No point in waiting around much longer - you need to make a move tomorrow.

Indeed, you either gotta come clean or push on Monday. Ie you need it off, or an explanation for why you can't (as you don't have work anyway, why can't you take it).

DO NOT mention that you know what is in the package; that indicates that you looked at correspondence that was not for you. Could be an instant termination and lack of benefits/severance

Best to just insist that due to lack of work; you will be taking personal time off for the next few days.

He can't say he KNOWS what was in the package, but he can say he saw the package (he signed for it) and suspects that it is for him given his lack of work. He could then say that he understands and doesn't want to drag it out.

He didn't look at it - but he noticed the packaging, which would be normal for obvious reasons. The right way to do it is to simply mention "Hey, I know you got a document from HR last week because I had to sign for it and I'd appreciate it if you would be forthright with me if it concerns me and my employment."

This. I believe you will need to be there Monday to receive your severance. If you have a job already, then it is likely you will not get anything.

Is it weird I feel a little jealous? I don't have any major complaints about my job, but I've been here close to 3 yrs at this point. I should probably move on just for the salary bump.

The trick is to obtain the severance without doing anything to justify not getting it.

Being end of month; medical benefits could be cut off 30 June.
Accrued Vacation/Sick time may not have to be paid - it is not a legal requirement unless in the contract.

I'd assume he'll speak to you tomorrow, shortly before closing time. It's pretty standard to let people go on Fridays or the last day of a pay period. There's no benefit to telling you earlier, with a big potential downside. Worst case, call in sick on Monday at the old job and see if he gives you the "bad news" over the phone.

Yup. I had typed up what's below earlier and ditched it.

It's obvious you don't care for the boss but what does he think about you? Would he go to bat for you regarding this severance package if he was certain he couldn't get burned? If so, get him alone and out of earshot and explain that seeing the handwriting on the wall, you have found another position and they need you to start Monday. Work it into the conversation that you have shared that information with no one but him and that you feel you have to make the move because you don't see much of a future for you where you're at, blah, blah, blah. You can throw in some fake sympathy for dropping it on him at the last second if you think it will help.

He's either going to fess up and try and do something for you on your way out or he is going to have you immediately escorted out. You either win big or you face the music just a little earlier and more rudely than you expected. It's a gamble. Either way you're out the door.

Unless you can get the new job to excuse you for Monday I say go for it.

That's a bad strategy, someone might find you useful and ask to keep you :awe:
