WTF kind of wasp spray did he use if it didn't have an effect? He should wait until the evening when the wasps/hornets go back inside for the night. Then hit it with a can of RAID or whatever and make sure to get it up the hole so it gets the bugs inside. spraying the outside of the nest won't do anything unless the spray is strong enough to actually break through.

Or like someone else said, spray the whole thing and then light it on fire. But of course that might hurt the building it's attached to...

Or have you seen the commercial on TV where they guy is on the ladder and the other guy is standing with the garbage can lid? Try that...

What kind of crappy hornet killer did your buddy use? I've wiped out bigger nests then that with less then a full can of RAID. The trick is to wait until night when they are all in there, and make sure you get some into the entrance. But even if you do it during the day the residue will kill anything that returns. That stuff is very effective.

get a bucket, fill it with water, and lift the bucket up until the nest is submerged. knock it off of the ceiling and cover the bucket for a bit.

I have no idea. he now tells me it's at his moms house. I gave him all of your advice. we'll see what happens

Some of the replies made me laugh out loud.
I like the spray foam idea.

Step 1: Go out at night in an outfit that covers a good portion of your body in case any of the hornets are still awake.

Step 2: Spray some sort of hornet killer all over the next and especially in the hole leading in.

Step 3: Wear protective suit during day and throw hornets nest into garbage bag and then into garbage. Most of the hornets should've died by now.

Step 4: Kill all hornets that are currently on the ground to annihilate enemy.

Forget all this fire and run stuff.

1) Get some hornet/bees nest spray.
2) Wait till the middle of the night.
3) Spray it directly in the center.
4) The following evening spray it with a pressure hose.

I say this from experience. I just did the same thing about 2 weeks ago with a nest about that size. The hornets are asleep at night, so they will get caught up in the poison you sprayed up there and most likely die. If they don't die, they will probably abandon their nest because there are still remnants of the poison (not too good for their spawn you know). That's why you wait till the following evening and then blast it with a pressure hose.

it will kill the hornets but it won't do anything to the nest.

And I'm sure the instructions on the can say to do it early in the morning when it's cold and they aren't active. I think it's more effective that way and also you don't run the risk of an angry bunch of hornets stinging you. It worked for me.

It's great excercise too as you hold that sucker till you drown them all out. Even 1 inch of space you open as you try to pry it off the ceiling will be enough to let them PISSED OFF wasps get out hehehe.
