HORRENDOUS encoding results with Conroe

hey all,

I'm running the Conroe rig in my sig (e6300 @ 2.6 ghz w/ MSI 975X).

I tried encoding a DVD with DVD shrink and i get horrible performance compared to old A64. It take 50 minutes to encode a DVD! My X2 used to do it in 12-15. What gives???

I don't think it's the CPU...try using some other software perhaps?
You know what it might be, the overclocked FSB might be causing problems for file access.

well, i download the chipset drivers directly from Intel. so once this is done encoding, i'm going to restart and try again.

TekDemon, can you elaborate on the FSB causing file access problems?

Isn't UDMA Mode 2 only like 33.3 MB/s ?
Would that be a problem or is that the dvd burner?

If it's a dvd burner in DMA2 thats fine. If it's a HD then you have a problem.
And why would the HD be on the secondary channel and the DVD be on the Primary. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

DVD Shrink is Multi-Threaded and should max out both cores to 100%

yes, the DVD burner is on the primary channel. I do it that way because the HDD is Sata, set up in BIOS to operate as IDE because of a problem in the MSI bios.

I just tried ripping "Garden State" using my E6400 @ 2.4 GHz and it was going to take an estimated 49 minutes or so. I checked the CPU usage and it topped out at around 15% max. It looks like I'm getting the same results as the OP. I don't ever remember ripping a movie in 12-15 minutes with my x2 3800+ though. It seems like it's always been about this same speed for me.

Encoding/compressing a DVD9 into a DVD5 takes my rig (link below) about 16 minutes at stock FSB - 2.4GHz. I haven't benched it with the o/c, as of yet. My E6300 o/c'd to 2.4 produced identical results.

BTW, ignore the estimate displayed by DVDShrink, it only becomes accurate well into the encoding process. Time it yourself, and let it run to completion. Otherwise, you have no idea how long it will take.

Something is seriously wrong with your rig, but I'm not sure what to suggest. Have you tried re-flashing your bios, and then benching with all stock settings? Are you sure you have all your drives (HD/optical) installed correctly? Try encoding with only your DVDROM drive hooked-up. Have DVDShrink create an image, as opposed to burning. I wish I could suggest more, but I'm not at all familiar with your board.

My rig (in sig) takes about 15-20 minutes depending on how big/long the DVD is. This is AFTER I've already copied the disc to the HD with DVD Decrypter then mount in Alcohol 120%

What bios version are you using OP and what issues are you having with the motherboard not working with the sata Drive? My sata drive seems to work great with bios 7.14B and 7.15.

Make sure backup's aren't running in low priority mode. That caused a slowdown for me in the past.

And to chime in....I rip/encode at about 6.5k-7k. (12-15 Minutes for Encoding) Thats with a s939 Athlon 3200 @ 2.65GHz. It's much faster if I rip the dvd and mount with Alcohol 120% (10k-11kb/sec)

You should always rip to your hard drive, then burn later (even if that's immediately afterward). Here's how long it took to rip True Romance with my Skt. 754 3700, at stock speed: link

Yeah, try copying the dvd to the hd first, then recode it with dvdshrink or whatever to downsize it to 4.7gb. When I recode a dvd off the dvdrw (Benq 1640) it never maxes my x2 3800 @ 2.4ghz. But if it copy it to hd, then recode it, both cores go 100%.

The bottleneck and variable is the dvdrw, it can only read that fast, 16x? I think for most?
Furthermore, certain dvds read a lot slower than others and that varies for me too.

Don't some DVD players try to optimize the "watching a DVD" case? In other words, if you have a DVD drive that can read at 32x, there's no point in spinning it at 32x if somebody is watching the movie at 1x.
