Horrible slowdown when downloading

Hey there,
I'm a newbie in need of some help. My problem is that after a while (10 or so minutes) of downloading (mp3, just plain web-browsing) everything slows down to a crawl. A mp3 will play for 2 seconds and stop, play again, and stop. When I click on anything, it takes about 5 seconds for it to highlight that icon. Everything else works fine, as long as I'm not online. I have a 700 slot A T-bird, MSI 6191 mobo, 128 pc100 RAM, Prophet II MX, 20 gig HD, integrated CL soundblaster soundcard, and I believe a U.S. Robotics 56k modem. I'm also running windows 98 SE, this problem still occured when I had Win:ME. BTW, this didn't happen when I originally had Win98 inside. It started after I put in Win:ME, and it is still there after I put back Win 98 SE. Thanks to anybody who can help.

how did you "put back" win98se? Sounds to me there is a conflict which lead to serious memory leak when you go from win98 to winme (and still there after you go back).... if that's the case, it's really hard to fix. in my experience memory leak in windows is one thing that can't be fixed unless -- format...

Oh, I definitely formatted when I switched the OS. BTW, I forgot to mention that I have a network card and that I'm am on a network with another computer. However, the slowdown still occurs if I didn't hook up the network(but card is still installed). Thanks.

Are you using godzilla or similar download managers? Cause I am running WinME as well and I encounter similar probs on my machine connected to download mananagers! My solution so far: not to use download managers and to wait for a new version!!

Ps: If anybody can recommend a download manager for WinME, please send a message or something...

try https://www.winamp.com,,,,,,if thats what your talking about , i use it a ton after downloading from napster.....
