I think I will stick with my 10/1mbps cable for $30/month. Cogent's networks tend to have lag and downtime. You also have to shovel out thousands and thousands of dollars to have the fiber run to one of their PoPs (points of precense).

Now THAT would be a hot deal for 99% of the rest of us who don't need 100MBPS.

Yeah, sure, but how many of us can take advantage of it? I keep getting flyers in the mail from AT&T BI telling me how great it is. I go to their web site, enter my address, and it says "Not Available in Your Area". So I email them to see WHEN it's going to be in the area and they respond with "Check our web site to see if service is in your area." Grrrrrrrrr.

No problem, their web site has a live chat feature. I get hooked up to one of their friendly representatives and ask the "when" question. His response: go to our web page and you can enter your address to see if you can get service. Now, THAT was helpful!

But seriously, I think cable service is unavailable to a very large part of the population......

Didn't I just read where AT&T is selling all their cable business to Comcast? I think Comcast is about the worse in getting cable internet out. They have no plans in my area to introduce it, and "call back in a couple of years". Fortunately I do have DSL.

I've heard good things about Cogent -- but this isn't for everyday users.

You must be in a large office building in which they already have customers (and the cities they service are very limited). If the building isn't already setup, they will drop fiber to the building, but only if there are enough other business in the building which will sign up for the service as well. I think their minimum is around five or six business before they'll commit to a building.

If you are planning on running a hosting service off this line, you'll need a wholesale/resale connection, which I believe is closer to $3000 per month -- and this is still quite a bargain for 100mbps.

What ISP does 10/1 for $30?

$1000 PER MONTH!

Man, that's the price of just 2 T1's around here. I better get on the phone and ditch my local telco's T1's.

That pricing only applies if they have fiber in your building directly... If they don't, they you will have to take the 100Mbps from their co-location center and order circuits from telco back to your facility. Not to mention that Cogent now owns Netrail and pretty much all their connectivity is via Netrail or AboveNet.
