she got her drive too... it was just her luck that i was there. she was about to give up when they said they only PM nearby competitors. if i didnt say anything about showing the policy on paper, she would have left and tried elsewhere.

went to MC this morning, picked up their new ad with the drive shown for $149 with 2MB cache, drove two blocks to Best Buy, and PM'ed the drive and got the rebates! I hope they go thru, I am a little worried about the "PriceMatch to Competitor $149" as well but I can't find any info stating that invalidates the rebate so I will bitch to no end if it doesn't go thru.
I'm wondering about that too. It says absolutely nothing about not honoring a rebate if you do a price match though. If anyone reads anything regarding this, please pass it along.

The thing that worries me more than other PM's is that my Best Buy receipt is a special receipt that lists the PM off to the left of it. Has anyone used receipt like this for a rebate submission? I'd love to use the rebate receipts printed off at the register, but I'm not sure that it's a good idea to submit these. I know they are rebate receipts, but BB has been picky about using the cash register receipt in the past and not the rebate receipt.

BTW.. My BB CSR not only gave me the PM, but he also gave me the 110% difference. My total was $151.xx with tax. I was pretty happy about that. I was happy that he didn't toss the rebate forms and receipts either. Having the register forms might give me a better case in getting the rebate since the manager let me have them.

$151
-100 MIR
-$20 MIR
=
$31 with tax after rebate (if I get the rebates)

I'd say that this is pretty hot!! Possibly even hotter than the JB deal I just did a week ago with CUSA for $60 after tax and rebates.

Sal

PS.. I called the Westmont, IL Microcenter to verify stock before I headed out to BB. I might've talked to the manager because he was saying that he's been getting calls all morning for the drive. He said that it has been on sale for a month and now all of a sudden, there is a ton of interest in it. Heh. He also said that he only has 4 left as of when I called. I didn't want to tell him that I wasn't worried about him running out of stock because people just wanted to verify stock to PM at OM or BB.

that flyer from microcenter does not say the price on it though....my bestbuy people get really picky and will not honor this. where can i get something that says the actual price of the drive on their site is 149?

FYI - If it hasn't been been mentioned, you can also do this deal at OMax. My local Best Buy said....."Nothin Doin"

so, I went two stores down and price-matched MC at O-max. The only difference is a $100 rebate instead of $120.

but I don't trust Young America anyway.

Well, since the rebate only requires that you send in a copy, just send a photocopy of the right-side of the receipt. It's got the dimensions of a regular receipt. My BB tossed the rebates also, so I'm stuck with this ugly yellow (and very large) receipt.

i will have to try this deal at my local OfficeMax. we have no Fry's or MicroCenter in my area (Miami FL) so PM can be tough when the stores require the competitor to be LOCAL not on the Internet. not expecting much here.

Print out the summary page instead of the flyer. When I did the CUSA deal for the 8 mb cache drive, I purposly didn't take the summary page to the store because it had the 2 mb cache info, but with this deal, I took the summary page into the store that has all the specs including the price.

I did receive all of the rebate forms and rebate receipts. I'm wondering if I should still submit my register receipt instead though. I know what you mean about making a photo copy of the PM receipt form and just cutting out the part that has the register printout. My luck, BB would deny the rebate because I didn't include the full receipt and not because a PM was done.

Sal

PS.. I wanted to mention that my OM PM sucks!! I tried to PM a 100 pack of Imation discs from Microcenter once and they wouldn't do it. Microcenter had them for $16.99 without rebates and OM had them for $39.99 - $25 MIR. I had actually purchased a bunch of 100 pack discs at Microcenter and I was going to return a pack to OM because I no longer wanted to to the rebate when I could have the discs for about the same price without rebates. When they said no to my PM attempt, I just returned them and got my money back. The PM wasn't worth fighting for when I had about 5 packs of Imation 100 packs already.

Why not send BOTH of the receipts with each rebate, just to be sure? You should have gotten two rebate receipts (I did). Send one rebate receipt with each and a copy of the right side of the big receipt with each as well. Then you have your bases covered. I only wish I would have read about the JB deal at CUSA before it was too late!

Has anyone ever contacted BB corporate? I need some tips...

I went in to the Citrus Heights (CA) BB and saw that they had 6 in stock. I grabbed one for work (I'm an IS guy) for use w/the corporate acct. and one for me with my own cc and headed to the counter. The girl said 'oh we had someone do this earlier', but then told me that the rebate didn't apply.

She got the MOD who smugly told me that the rebate wouldn't apply. I said 'oh the BB $20 rebate?' She said there was no $20 BB rebate and I wouldn't get the $100 MIR. After explaining how manufacturer rebates work to her and going back and forth for a few minutes she told me that she was only going to let me buy one anyways. BS #1. I made her get her manager. She came back and relayed that her manager said he'd sell me one. I said 'oh is this corporate policy if there are many units in stock?' and she said that it was the managers discretion and that no corporate policy was needed. BS #2!

She then proceeded to ring up the one and again said that she was going to take the rebate that printed out and not give it to me. I sent her back to the manager who amazingly enough agreed with her...and told me that they needed another cc because the corporate amex didn't have *my* name on it! I told her to CALL the company and verify if she wanted to, but she said that the person in charge of the acct. would need to come down and pay for it...the CFO of the company! BS #3

I had put up with enough, so I told her that he would be happy to come down and purchase the unit directly from the CFO of BB. Having that idea rejected I took down her name, her managers name, the code of the store, told her that I did not personally hold her responsible for her lack of knowledge of company policy but that I would be contacting the corporate office and taking this matter further.

So where to from here? Does corporate even care?

Great idea! Thanks! I'll send in the rebate receipts along with a copy of the right side of the original sales receipt and ommitt the left side that has all the price match stuff. I like to cover all my bases when I do rebates, especially with $100 rebates.

Man.. This deal was a ton easier than the deal I did with the JB drive PM to Microcenter at CUSA. I've only done two PM's with CUSA and they both were a horrible experience (two separate stores). I really felt like I earned the price match when I left CUSA.

Thanks,

Sal

So if I got all the rebate receipts from the CSR I should have no problem getting the rebates, right?

I picked one up today on my lunch hour and paid full price. I drove by MicroCenter on the way home and picked up an ad and found out they were out of stock until tomorrow night. I went over to a nearby Best Buy and got shot down. She told me "there's 2 reasons we can't do it- 1. They don't have any drives in stock, I called a little while ago, 2. Our price is cheaper than theirs after $120 in rebates. I acted pissed and said my buddy had no problems pricematching and then I walked out. I took a swing by another store on my way home and tried again. The girl couldn't understand the Microcenter ad where the $259 is crossed out and she turned it over to another guy who said that someone else had tried to do it today and they called and were told by MicroCenter that the drive was $259. I broke out the webpage printout and showed them the $149 price and they had a pow-wow with the manager who must have gave them the greenlight. I got a refund of $117.76 on my credit card. So I've got 2 120 gig WD drives in the past couple of weeks, one of them the SE 8 meg cache, for about $80 total after rebates.
Woo-Hoo!

PM was no good at my local BB. They said their BB price *after rebate* was better than the MC price.

Then he went on to advise me that "99% of the time" BB will not PM MC. When I asked why he said, "MC has a lot of open box and return items." What is this guy talking about, I asked myself. I then asked what criteria would be used to fall into the lucky 1% category. He had no reply. Finally, he said it would be manager's discretion.

And, importantly, he pointed out that in the fine print of their PM policy, that BB would not PM other stores "special" prices. This seems like a wide open loop hole for BB to disallow any PM based on anything other than regular retail price.

What crap!

EDIT:

I forgot to mention that there were no drives on the shelf. However, I went to the counter and --suprise, suprise-- they pulled one out when I asked for it. I don't know how many others they had stashed away.

Would be pretty hot if the Fry's offer was for the retail boxed version....but it's for the BARE DRIVE only. Gotta read that fine print.

You said it... as if BB doesn't also have plenty of "open box" items for sale as well.

I successfully PM'd at the BB in Braintree MA using the flyer and mentioning the MC store in Cambridge MA. I even had the MC phone number ready for them but they didn't even call. Note: although they PM'd the price down to $149, they would NOT give me the rebate forms printed by the register. I printed them from BB's website.

Unsuccessful pm in San Rafael California (marin city bb).
1. Claimed I needed an ad direct from the store, no internet print outs. Would not even call to verify.
2. I said your pricematching policy does not say that anywhere, he says yes it does, I point to it on the wall and say where. He says talk to this guy. He does all the paperwork for the store he claims. He uses the clause at the bottom of the policy saying ask him for more details. He says it will not work. I ask for it in writing, and he says its in the training manuals and I can not see it.

My regional bb is gonna get one pissed off caller, and letter. Bastards

All done at the register by the way.

hey logers, dont waste you time trying to contact Best Buy customer service. they suck. they dont care what you have to say, if the store told you something, then that is it. not questions asked. I have had problems with them before, and they dont do anything for you.

Was able to do the deal at the BB in Cincinnati/Tri-County this evening and was able to get my OD leather chair for free...what an evening! Guess I'm pretty fortunate since there happens to be a MicroCenter down the road about 2 miles from BB.

I think the key is to go buy the HD and come back a little bit later for the PM (or better yet try another BB if you get shot down at the purchasing store). This will ensure that you can at least get a drive (there were 2 left when I bought mine...none when I came back 45 minutes later for the PM) and they don't get the chance to play games and keep your rebate forms and rebate receipts. When you come back, just bring the original receipt. Keep the rebate receipts and the rebate forms. You may also want to photocopy or scan the main receipt in case they want to keep it or write "no rebate" on it or whatever.

I bought the drive using a credit card (used AMEX with BVG as a backup)

Went down the street a few miles to OD to get a $20 PM on the famous leather chair deal from a week and a half ago. Ended up being free after rebate ($69.99 price - $20 coupon - $30 rebate - $20 PM (since chair is in the flyer this week at $49.99). Actually I guess it will end up being about $2 with tax.

I went back to BB about 45 minutes after making the purcahse. Here is how the conversation went.

ME: Handed him the receipt and MicroCenter ad and said I bought this a little bit ealier and then found it cheaper at MC and was wanting to get a PM.

BB CSR: He didn't even look at the ad so he must have been familiar with it. He said that we have it for $249 less $120 rebate which only comes out to $129.

ME: Said I would much rather get it at the lower price now than have to worry about collecting the rebates (I didn't think to use this line but you could also say that you've never had very good luck getting rebates).

BB CSR: Asked me if I got the rebate forms and I said I didn't even know about it. He said he would see what he could do for me. He went and consulted with someone (manager I guess) and started typing on one of the terminals at the other end of CS counter and came back over several minutes later with the new receipt and he had me fill out the return section on some form. He said that he went ahead and credited $106 back on my credit card. I was a very happy camper so I didn't even worry about the 10% PM difference.

If they end up denying the PM, you can always try another BB store if there's another one in your area. You could even try to come back to the same store another day and try it. If they deny you, there's probably not much use in getting mad at them or asking to talk with the manager. Just tell them in a calm and cool manner "humm I'm gonna have to think about that....I may just end up returning the drive and getting it at MicorCenter to avoid the rebate hassle".

Out the door price ended up being about $158 and final price will be $38 after rebates come in.

Good luck with the deal.
