I also noticed the light grey image around the ring last night. Allowed the monitor about 10 minutes to 'warm up' and then did auto adjust, image went away.

This is mainly my secondary computer and I'll probably keep the 20" as my main [just cause I love a big screen] but for what this one gives it is a pretty good bargin.

The ;halo' is probably structural. The monitor has to be joined back to front and what you are likely seeing is the pressure these bindings put on the screen itself. If you ever push on a LCD device screen in a spot you will see the same effect. That makes it something that could change from monitor to monitor depending on how tightly they are joined.

Got one from Super Wal-mart of Lafayette, IN a couple of days ago. No problems up to now. Still I decided to stick to my Dell FP1800. The C893 is a great monitor for that price.

Except in this case the halo goes away after the monitor has been on for awhile where a similar marking due to pressure goes away as soon as the pressure is relieved.

Except the reason it goes away could be do to the screen and monitor heating up and possibly loosening or spreading the pressure. LCDs don't use much power but the screen does warm up nicely after a while.

i have been saving up for a 17" lcd with built in tuner such a the Sampo 17.4 from costco.com for $600 but this is so tempting. I have heard most tunetv/lcd combo don't function too well as a TV though. Any commnets before I take the plunge. Also, what is wall'y return policy, 30 days?

That's exactly what mine looked like. I was watching for it today after letting it sit all night and it was not there. I'm not sure if the Auto Adjust was the problem or not, but after I manually adjusted the screen it looked much better anyway. If anyone hasn't already done so, read my post above re: the Auto Adjust.

You might want to look at the Cornea 1702, which is about $500. There are a lot on eBay from authorized dealers, but you can get it cheaper from on-line merchants (Check with Pricegrabber.com). Amazingly, it has a DVI input, which might allow it to be a cheap HDTV monitor with a new set-top box.

Instead of turning off the LCD I let it go into standby after turning the computer off, no halo to be seen.

Review of Microtek's C783 is here:

I paid $440 for the 17" after rebates and everything and Office Depot normally sells it for $580.

Monitor was great, very little ghosting for an LCD, and excellent analog conversion. Had tiny speakers too (great for work). Can't say much for the styling, but it works well.

I bet you by this spring these things will be selling for under 200 bucks. Everyone else will be buying the new 21" with a refresh rate of <20. for 500.00...With Digital In.

I'm gonna keep my SamSung 900NF. I have looked at the diffrence between analog and digital signal. It's worth the wait!

Damn! Why am I telling you guys this? BUY BUY BUY!!! That way mine will be even cheaper! Thanks!

I have the Cornea 1702, I'm actually using it mainly to watch TV and occasionaly as a second monitor. It works great, I have my VCR hooked into it via RCA cables. As far as gaming, I take it to LAN parties and I often forget I'm playing on an LCD. I'm definitely no connesieour (sp?), but I have to say I'm very happy with it.

BTW, I'd gotten it from a Ubid auction for a fairly good price.

Basically i think this is overall a great deal.. bought the monitor myself after hesitating for a great deal of time

For the ppl who bought this:
Seems like everyone encounters ghosting after leaving the monitor by itself or that it is in suspension mode... when it starts up.. there is always this effect. I have solved it by hitting the auto button ..regarding the vertical lines mentioned above... i don't seem to have that problem. Guess everyone is facing different problems then

On the sidenote... Tung just posted one deal about a 17" LCD for 299... not sure if he has the links or not but i think that's a even better deal if the stats of the LCD is good .. so for those who can't get hold of this deal.. you might want to try the other

Anyone in California have luck acquiring one of these?

I'm trying to get one through someone on this board, but they're busy trying to make the most out of it via ebay (and of course, my offer isn't going to top the one those suckers on ebay pay.) Perhaps I'm the only one irritated by the people who buy several to make profit, and not let others have a chance to get in on the good deal. Anyway..

If no one knows how to acquire one in California, would anyone be interested in brokering one for me?

Okay,

I finally hooked this thing up tonight after work. Overall, I am feeling that despite the price, this is only a warm deal. Been running two hours. For text work this thing is great... easy on the eyes and with a little tweaking (auto adjust just did not look right) the colors are great. As for games, Q3A and Urban Terror give me quite a bit of ghosting... It was worse before I manually adjusted things, but even now it is readily apparent. I'll admit, some maps are worse than others, for example maps with a lot of contrasting colors from dark to light and vice versa. Have not tried a driving or flight sim yet- maybe tomorrow I'll get around to it.

I want to keep it up a day or two more, to determine if I get the "halo" or not, and see if I can do some more tweaking to eliminate the ghosting. I am running at 1280x1024 32 bit color. My video card is a GeForce 2 GTS, so my frame rates are not insanely high, but I am pushing low 90s in UT.

If I can't get it any better, I'm taking it back this weekend (gotta love Walmart generous return policy!) Of if somebody is still interested, I'll put it in the original box and ship it... Use the cash to get a nice 19 or 21 inch CRT.

Keep everyone posted.

just go to your local walmart and have them do what is called an MTR. they can have any walmart in your district send one to your store in a few days. if anyone tells you otherwise they are lazy, misinformed, or just plain mean. go up to the customer service desk and look at all those posters talking about how 'american' and how 'friendly' their store is. you should see a picture of some middle-aged fart with the title of 'store manager.' insist on speaking with him directly. do not accept an 'assistant manager.' at the very least you want to speak with a 'co-manager.' he prolly hangs around the store from around 7am to 5pm, although he might leave early. anyway, once you get ahold of the guy, tell him you shop for food there very often, and buy your baby's diapers there. then tell him about the monitor and how badly you wife needs it.

good luck
