If it looks anything like the 17" version, this is a pretty smoking deal.

Review of Microtek's C783 is here:
link

I paid $440 for the 17" after rebates and everything and Office Depot normally sells it for $580.

Monitor was great, very little ghosting for an LCD, and excellent analog conversion. Had tiny speakers too (great for work). Can't say much for the styling, but it works well.

just as i said, your machine is more likely be slower than a p4 1.7 withgeforce4 4400 with a more optimized driver , or a p4 1.7 with ati 9700pro.

at the best your system is only a good system in today's standard, not a optimized system. SO STOP BRAGGING ABOUT IT!!

So, have we given JohnGer an award yet? Oooh, I know, how about the "Welcome-to-the-Forums-now-Shut-Up" man of the minute award. Congrats John, you deserve it.

Any "Power User", aka, someone either doing professional design/development or playing a ton of games, will want a CRT monitor, as the color-representation of ANY current-technology LCD will not be up to snuff. Period.

And after glancing around at the myriad of LCD's I have sitting next to me (all hi-end, thankyouverymuch) -- I will still walk across the room to a 4 year old, 70 lbs. monster CRT for my gaming pleasure and grahpic design work.

Oh so now you know what all 'power users' want? Interesting. Did you replace the Miss Cleo network? I am tickled that you enjoy your gaming pleasure on a dinosaur but i prefer this new 18" LCD with no ghosting/trails and super sharp images. The image is simply awesome. As for graphics design work I cant really say much about that because I don't do that. I can say that the games so far look awesome.

Btw, platicquart, I have a card behind my back. What is it?

you have a nice day with all those high end LCDs.

I wonder why anyone posts hot deal items for over $20 on here because it is obvious that many on here are unable to afford anything costing much more than that and therefore have to rain down on the parade because their envy is killing them. Pups eat your hearts out.

cheers

Enough crying. You act like someone is standing in your room pissing on your LCD. I think you would find more children your age on the playgrounds at FW. You should head over there.

While I too feel the urge to get an LCD, and I disagree with the reason he is posting(borderline threadcrapping), he is a little bit right. LCDs have a huge advantage in size, weight and eye-friendliness, while CRTs have about twice the contrast and brightness, no ghosting(LCDs have variable ammounts of ghosting, the best ones have a tiny(unnoticable to most) bit, but until we are at about 10ms total(rising+falling), there will still be some ghosting), and generally superior color representation. To see this, go to your local computer store and line up side by side a high-spec LCD and a high-spec CRT, and try to represent a dark, colorful scene, such as a sparsly lit tunnel. The CRT will usually win, while the LCD will keep much of the poorly-lit textures at black.

I think that while this new generation(are we on 4.5G or 5G now?) of LCDs is better than ever before, we need to wait another year or two until we reach the point where CRTs and LCDs are totally equal from a quality standpoint(much less a price standpoint). Good news is that judging from people who went to the CES tradeshow, pretty much EVERYONE is changing gears to LCDs, in TVs and computers.

the UPC code should be at least 10 digits, so 931118000 isn't long enough.

the Walmart I work at doesn't carry these or I would post the UPC, we only carry KDS lcd's right now.

Why are so many people getting so upset in this thread? They're computers and opinions, neither of which count for much.

Idiot, err, JohnGer... please allow me to retort:

To clarrify your current surroundings -- This is a discussion forum. People post deals - we discuss them. Some deals are good - others aren't. But what makes this forum esp. nice is the fact that many of the forum members are rather computer literate (myself included). Given that fact, we generally like to discuss common uses for the items that are mentioned.

And when it comes to display devices -- be they television or computer -- many people have preferences for a particular type of display technology (eg, CRT or LCD). And in short, the common perception is that, all things considered, CRT's provide a better picture -- regardless of application. And that is what many of us tend to prefer -- a better picture. (Yes, you may have preferences that differ... and you are welcome to your preferences, but the rest of us have our own as well. Recognize.)

Yes, LCD's are nice. The look cool. They don't take up much space. Their prices are certainly coming down. And, functionally speaking, they perform adequately-well with respect to most applications. But any side-by-side comparison of picture quality with a similarly sized CRT is no contest. Yes, no contest.

Viewing angle, color definition, ghosting, desktop-size (native resolution) -- these are some of the main characteristics where LCD's typically fall short of their CRT brethren. But again, some or all of these things may not matter to you, but on the other hand, they may indeed matter to someone else. And it is these very points that we like to discuss.

Now, while all input is valued... berating people for no apparent reason will win you one thing -- complete disdain from your fellow forum members. What do you expect when you start name-calling and behaving like a moron with your second post?

If you can't stand to have people pose questions to you or about a particular item (the HORROR, how dare they!), then you might want to look for HOT DEALS elsewhere.

I'm starting to wonder if the response time is the only thing that effects ghosting. I agonized over the Dell 1900fp and the 2000fp models for about a month. Both have 25ms response times, but according to the many reviews and forum posts I've read about it, the 1900fp has significant ghosting, while the 2000fp has none. I can back this up too because I decided to get the 2000fp and have been playing UT2003, Max Payne, JKII, etc. on it for the last three weeks or so and haven't noticed anything. It makes me wonder if there are other factors involved.

I am very disappointed at the childish nature of this thread.

I am also, however, very interested in this LCD as I am short on cash.

John:

You must understand your opinions can only mean so much to us. One thing about monitors and video cards is that their quality and worth is subjective. We do not know what you've seen and we don't know what you're comparing this to.

Everyone else is making statments based on paper facts. This, while perhaps not as accurate as your account of the monitor(s), is less biased and perhaps more useful.

Nonetheless, thank all for the good find. I'll see if I can check it out.

i think everyone bickering here needs to read this book.

Life's too short to have "urination contests? lets just try to have constructive arguments.

And remember, you never learn anything from someone who agrees with you.

Keep checking everyone. We had about 20 of these come in on a truck last week. They are not on the sales floor yet so they may be a feature or else a new mod (when stuff gets moved around on the shelves and reset, etc.). I'm guessing they are a feature. I will check into it when I work again on Thursday.

For those of you who got one, look at the white tag on there and there is a part of it that looks like a bandaid. Does it say GO or NEWMOD on it?

Ok - I need you and the other two kids to please take it out of this thread. This is a very hot deal IMO and I would very much like more information about it. At this price I can afford to upgrade the CRT's in the house to LCD, get more viewing area, and save desk space. I am going to check the local walmarts tonight (for some reason all of the numbers listed for the 4 walmarts we have in town are busy, maybe they can't pay the phone bill.. )

For someone who joined not too long ago himself you got a pretty big mouth....

As far as JohnGer is concerned, for a nubee he started into this thread with good constructive information - why don't you save some bandwidth and leave him alone?
