I just called the local Wally Mart here in Lincoln, NE and the guy said they just got a bunch of them in the last 2 days. Price is $398.89 and I would suspect all the stores will getting them soon.....I am going to go check one out tomorrow....

Drgnlvrs, Great Post!

Engineer, Thanks for the great feedback.

I wish there wasn't so much noise in this thread. There's work to be done.

I checked the Parkesburg Pa. Walmart. No joy. I asked the kid stocking the shelves in the electronics dept and he hadn't seen anything come in. I'll keep trying Chester County.

Has anyone checked the new Walmart by the New Castle County airport in Delaware? No sales tax in Delaware. Gotta love it.

Also, Costco has the Proview 17" LCD for sale for $399 you can PM to CC ($499) which has two $50.00 MIRs. That would bring the cost down after pm and mir to $290. Not bad! The sales guy at the Christianna Mall CC was willingly to pm to Costco.com even though the Costco across the parking lot didn't stock them.

FYI, apparently the Proview is identical to the MAG and both are rebadged KDS RAD7Cs. I had a chance to do a side by side comparison of the KDS and Proview at Microcenter. Good monitors, not great. I'm hoping the Microtek blows them away so I can get off the fence and feel comfortable parting with by hard earned cash.

Thanks everyone!

17" LCD $329 shipped

I would be interested to hear some validated opinion on this comparoison too.

Well it is cheaper however the refresh time is a horrible 50ms and the contrast is a pathetic 200:1 however it is cheaper but I would spend the extra $ and get the Walmart oneif you can find it

Yes - great, informative post Engineer

On the Eastcoast Costco sells the Envision 17" LCD for $399. I also saw an 18.1" Princeton but no price and it was not turned on, so can't tell how good it is.

Sorry about the noise - I said my piece and I'll let it rest for now.

Looks like the word is out on FW. Someone already has one up on Ebay. :|
FWIW, I have the Microtek 15" C593. It's OK, but not the best I've seen. But then I olny paid $165, so I'm happy with it.

Virginia Beach must be representing tonight. I picked up one at the Lynnhaven/Princess Anne location. Definately a nice upgrade from a 17" Dell Trinitron. There's some ghosting in Quake 3 but it's not bad.

I went to check the Walmart in Milpitas CA in the McCarthy area. No 18" LCDs to be found. Maybe they'll come out tomorrow? The computer aisle was pretty small, ghetto, and under maintenanced.

My roomate and I left about 5 of these at the Wal-Mart we checked, here in Lexington, KY. The store is at the corner of Man-O-War and Nicholasville Rd. If anyone is in the area, you should be able to find one there.

Creative Labs Inspire 4.1 speaker -- $48 (pricewatch $52.95)
KDS 17" XF7B flat CRT -- $118

They also have a pallet of 4 head Sanyo VCR's (non hifi) for $35 and a huge bin of $7 DVD's (many, many titles).

I think we need to figure out a sure-fire way that people can determine the stock of their respective local WalMart's.

I find it incredibe that a company can have so much inventory so akwardly distributed around the US.

Anyone that works there have a quick and (hopefully painless) way of determining if a store carries these?

Here is some education for you guys explaining why low response times have little to do with ghosting. They give an indication, but have no direct link. This is from a thread in the General Hardware section.

Here is the quote from the Samsung LCD engineer at CES

Total response time = Rise time + Fall time. Rise time sends the full electrical signal to the pixel and produces white. The electricity is stopped and then the pixel falls to black. The problem with the measurement is that pixels on TV's rarely move from full white to full black. There is another measurement though (I forgot what he called it) that is how long it takes a Pixel to shift from one color to another and that is almost always longer. It has to do with sending a non-full signal to the pixel and the fact that the "energizing" of the pixel at non-max can be significantly longer than when going to white/black. This is why posted response times on computer LCDs never seem to have bearing on gaming ghosting (except to be someone directional) and those with a higher response time can actually seem to have less ghosting.

Here is the link to the AVSforum original thread. They are discussing the new 54" LCD displayed at CES this year.

AVS Forum original thread page 2

Companies have discovered ways of compensating for these color switched taking longer such as LG/Philips "overdrive" they currently use in their 52" LCD.

I only post this because so many people here just rattle off what they are told that response time is everything. It is an indicator, but a poor one at that. I was tired of people telling other "not" to buy the LCD at Walmart due to its higher response time (see Hot Deals). They never even had the gall to see the unit before condemning it (even though users reported NO ghosting to minimal).

The original Anandtech Forum thead is here

Is there any "translation" from LCD response times, and refresh rates?

At home, my CRT monitor is always at 85 refresh or better. Clear as a bell in games. At work, I have a 17' LCD. And just using it for work, I can tell the "refresh" is way slow. No way I would have it for fast moving games.

Not really,
There is no need for an LCD to refresh it's screen like a CRT does..

get out your video camera and point it at your CRT and then at your LCD.. see a big difference? you should.. see almost NO lines with the lcd and a bad flicker with the crt.. I don't know the technical terminology but I do know that 1024x768 on my sony md81 lcd looks as good flickerwise as my fp1350x crt at 1024x768 100hz and I'm very sensitive to crt refresh anything below 75 gives me a headache.
