WOn't let me add one to my cart...

EDIT: Using you link, you can't add it to the cart. Just goto their frontpage and search for "USBE_TEKR_22_62"... you can then add it.

Your title should read "AR". It looks like a nice enclosure. The price is certainly good.

If you like this, check out the auction site (that begins with an "e") and do a search for "Ultra Slim Enclosure". I just received mine today and it looks sweet. I haven't gotten my hard drive yet, so I can't tell you how it performs, but it sure is tiny (only .425 inches thick). The case is made from stainless steel sheet metal and it has a nice brushed finish.

It comes out to $22-$25 shipped, and it took about 10 days to arrive (from Hong Kong!!!)

I think SVC.com also sells something like this, but for a higher price ($35 + shipping)

Whoa, those look cool! There's also a seller (if you search for "steel usb 2.5" in titles & descriptions) who has them for $26, free shipping, and he's in Cali, so the shipping should be quicker. I think I'm going to grab one.

I am in the market for an External HD but all of them are way expensive than the internal ones, and hardly have any deals on them.

Can I use this enclosure to fit an internal HD in to it and use it as an external one with the inbuilt USB 2.0 ports that it has?

Has anyone done this? Both of my computers are laptops and I desperately need more storage, this would be great if I think what it is.

Yep, that's exactly what this is. It is just an external case that you add a 2.5" Laptop HD to.

So now when I shop for a HD I have to make sure that it is for a laptop or to match it with the size of the enclosure? I can't just get the one that has the best deal on it and then look for a matching enclosure that would work??

How does this work, or wht is the best way to go about it?

If you don 't mind a larger enclosure, then you can get one made for a 3.5" hard drive. It will save some money since 3.5" drives are cheaper, faster, and higher capacity than laptop drives.

Most of the 3.5" external enclosures that I have seen require an external power supply. Having to carry around the power brick sort of takes away from the portability. Your chances of getting laptop external enclosure that is powered through the USB port of the Firewire port is better with a 2.5" drive.

Most 3.5" enclosures will require an external power supply because the USB port cannot handle such big harddrives. I haven't had much experience with 2.5" enclosures but this one states that it is powered with the USB port.

To Cataphract:
This enclosure will only support laptop hdd (2.5") if you want to buy normal desktop harddrives (3.5") then you will need a 3.5" enclosure. It looks like ATACOM has one for $43.95 found here: Linky

Thanks for the info.

I was browsing some sites for Int HD's but none of them list whether it is a 3.5" or 2.5", so is 3.5" the standard size for internal HD's and that is the reason thay are not listing that in specs?

If not, how do you find out what size the drive is, in order to buy a matching enclosure.

of course a 3.5" drive is preferrable in almost every way, but there are 2 things that make laptop drives really cool:
they are low power enough to be usb-powered in this case. also, they stand up MUCH BETTER to shocks while running than 3.5" drives. they're designed to since most people tend to be sort of rough on laptops.

Simple to do:

3.5" drives are standard drives used in desktop computers. They are NEVER used in notebook computers.
2.5" drives are used almost exclusively in notebook computers.

You have to make a little bit of an effort to buy 2.5" drives. Not every vendor carries them. In fact, if you ask your average Best Buy sales idiot, you'll probably get a blank stare.

One last piece of advice: Make sure you get a 2.5" drive that's 9.5 mm thick. Almost all of them being made now are that way, but some places still sell the older ones. All of the super-slim enclosures are designed for a 9.5 mm drive. The older ones will not fit.

Here's a good place to buy notebook drives. They are not the cheapest, but the free shipping is nice. And if you don't live in California, you don't pay any sales tax.

I actually just bought this Internal HD from staples
Internal HD

I am confused about the interface that they are mentioning for the enclosures, they say compatible with IDE or EIDE and some say "Supports up to UDMA/133 ", the HD that I bought says it has Ultra ATA/133 type interface.

So now do I need to look for interface specifications when selecting an enclosure for the drive, I just want a USB 2.0 box to house the drive and work it like a HD.

Has anyone done this before? Any recommendations as to which enclosure to get for the drive that I just bought.

Please help.

actually i had this one @ SVC $65.99.

Personally for laptop, this probably the best one you can get. Uses firewire connection and has a build in rechargeable lit-ion battery, so it doesn't drain your laptop battery. Also the nice thing about it, it actually automatically charges through a 6 pin port, so it charges the battery when I hook it up to my desktop system. Power by the battery when connects through the laptop.

Can last about 2-3 hours of movie time per charge, or 5-6 hours depends on what i am running on the drive.

Paid $99 + tax for it..........

What about the interface requirements? Will it take an Ultra ATA/133 HD?

I have a 2.5 USB/Firewire enclosure that holds my 40gb 5400 IBM Travelstar.....real nice for moving ripped DVD's around....

USB power works just great when using USB interface.
Firewire interface gets power from a PS/2 Keyboard passthrough so it can tap the 5v line....real slick.

Edit: Oh yeah, this item will cost me $30 afte rebate to have it shipped to Seattle, Wa.....pretty decent price....
