Funny, cause I just replaced my full 60GB with the 200GB model of this drive that I got from someone on the forums. Then, the 45GB on my parents' computer bit it 2 days ago, so I have to get a replacement for that now.

Anyways, this drive is OOS almost everywhere in the Metro Detroit area . I was able to go into the CC near me though, and special order it - if you order it within the sale period, and pay in full when you order, CC gives you the rebate slips. So don't fret if no stores near you have it in . My drive should be there on Wednesday .

Picked up one in at the Athens, GA CC. Guy in front of me was trying to get the same deal(he saw it on big wallet). Anyway, the girl at the register was new and didn't have a clue what she was doing. At first she said we don't get the 10% and we both called BS so 20mins later after a chat with the manager she said she couldn't give us a GC but she could give us a discount. She only gave us a $20 discount though instead of $25 but $5 doesn't matter much.

I've never done RAID before, but could I use this with an 80 gb WD SE drive in RAID 0 or should they both be the same size?

no, for RAID 0 you really need identical drives (or you'd only use 80GB of the 250)

JBOD RAID is Just a Bunch Of Drives like you got, and there is no performance or redundancy advantage. It's basically just logical volume management done in hardware so the OS will see it all as one drive.

personally I'm thinking RAID 1 'cause how else could one cheaply/easilly backup 250GB? Or RAID 5 would be real sweet with an expensive card and more drives....

Software raid it should be fine.

I'm using a 100 gig and a 160gb sliced up into raid 1 for launching programs quicker and raid 0 for a work area.

Used md on linux and it was easy as pie.

If you are running 2000 or 2003 server you should be able to use the windows FT driver for the same effect.

Hardware raid? I think the drives should be the same size.......

As these harddrives get bigger and bigger, doesn't back up time and defrag time get longer too? Seems the bigger the drive, the more advantages AND disadvantages.

Is access time slower on a bigger drive too? How does WD compare with Maxtor. WD seem a bit noiser to me then Maxtor, but that's only with drives I've personally used.

I love my Maxtor Fluid Bearing drives.
I guess the defrag time will get longer, but I usually do it overnight so that isn't an issue.

I say larger the better As for access times, can't you just partition it into smaller drives ?

Theyve made it so you cant order it on the webpage anymore, even for local pickup. So that kills the gift card offer.

No...the deal is still alive. Go thru Amazon.com's link to Circuit City and order it there. It's showing up as available for local pickup...just did it myself. All of the rebates are valid as well, including the gift card.

I don't see the rebate or gift card info at Amazon, although the Circuit City logo does show up. How does that work with Amazon/CC and the rebates/card? Thanks.

Edit: I also see that the gift card rebate form at CircuitCity.com specifies the purchase must be made at that web address. How does a purchase through Amazon qualify? Does the rebate-required confirmation e-mail of the Amazon purchase actually come from circuitcity.com? Edit edit (?!): Okay, I see from the FW thread that folks had gotten confirmation of the rebates/card offers being valid through Amazon.

Edit3: Sorry to keep coming back with bad news (I really wanted this hard drive), but people are reporting over at FW that the've ordered it through Amazon and gotten "sorry, it just sold out, your card has been refunded" messages when trying to schedule pickup from stores showing as sold-out on the Circuit City web site. Grrrrr.

i took the plunge and ordered it through amazon.com, have not gotten an email from circuit city yet.

WOW!!!! I decided to give it a shot through Amazon, despite my voiced reservations (sorry again), and it seems to have worked! I just got the confirmation e-mail from circuitcity.com stating my item is ready for immediate pickup! It also specifically identified both of the $70 rebates AND the 10% gift card rebate. Very cool. Thanks OP! I'll update tomorrow after I (hopefully -- I'm still in believe-it-when-I-see-it mode) pick it up.

I'm having a problem installing this big drive. Data Lifeguard does not work and allow the drive to be setup alone.

If anyone has the url to directions on installing this in an XP machine I would appreciate it.

Thank you for the Amazon link to CC but the nearest 4 stores listed are too far away and aren't worth the 'possible' $25 GC. Ended up getting it at a fairly local B&M earlier this afternoon. They printed out 2 $70 rebate forms and extra receipts. Caveat: one rebate form asks for the original UPC, the other a copy of the UPC. Don't mixed them up.

Dustin, the CC clerk asked if I visited the AnandTech or FatWallet site.

FYI, this drive rang up as 224.95 at my local Circuit City in Harrisburg, PA (printed out the 2 70.00 rebates as well). Got the last one on the shelf, but this may be happening elsewhere...ymmv. They were newbs at the register (they tried to charge me for a giftcard...haha), but they didn't do any priceadjusting, just scanned the item and it popped up at that price. So for me, 224.95 - 70 - 70 - 22gc = 62.95 plus tax. w00t.

Are these the 1 year or 3 year warranty drives? I thought I read somewhere that even the Western Digital SE retail drives were knocked down to a 1 year warranty plan, with only the OEM versions staying at 3 years. I didn't see any warranty info on the CC site.

Good luck to everyone who got in on this. The closest CC that has one is about 70 miles away.

If the drive has a manufacture date before Oct 2003, you have 3 years...at least that is my understanding. You can see the manufacture date on the drive itself if you flip the package over. Mine was prior to 10/03 and checks out as 3 yr.

They are both 1 and 3 year warranty drives. Most people are getting 3 year warranty drives, but the one I picked up was only 1 year warranty (verified by entering serial number at www.wdc.com). And yeah, even the "SE" drives, manufacturered after October 1, 2003 (or a little before... mine is Sept 23) are only 1 year warranty.

I'm going to try finding another one and returning this one if possible.
