I was looking around for a good 27" TV set. Stumbled upon this thread at AVSForum.com:

Enter service menu: all done with remote..

1, power button off tv,mute,1,8,2,power button on tv

2, submenu:video settings 3

3, change no 1080i=1 to no 1080i=0

4, hit mute to save

5, turn tv off, when you turn it back on, its an HDTV

The HDTV function of these TVs is NOT advertised! Circuit City DENIES that this is possible. As far as I can tell - the tubes are the same as the tubes in the HDTV sets - with the 1080i funciton disabled. Read the above thread to see that it has been tested with an XBOX at 1080i as well as a Comcast HDTV tuner box at 1080i. Seems like great sets for the money!

This "feature" works with both the 27" and the 32" TVs!

Circuit City has the TXN2745FP for $450

Circuit City also has the TXN3245FP for $650

If you order on-line make sure to pick up at B&M near you to save on shipping.

Use your 10% Giftcard of $200 or more purchase mailer from Circuit city - Expires Aug 30th. Or find the e-mail version on TechBargains or FW - EXPIRES TODAY!!. I read that some people had luck bringing in the e-mail version to the store and got 10% off on the spot!

Please let us know when you get the TV what you think!

Also - from what I have read in this post at AVSForum.com the set is not set up properly from the factory. So it may not look good out of the box - but after some tweaking they seem to think it looks better than both Sony and Toshiba sets that cost $$$ more!

I'll hopefully be picking mine up tonigh!

Nope...1080i is interlaced...hence the 'i'.

480p means it will display a full 480 lines of horizontal resolution progressively (at once)...not interlaced. Couple that with anamporhic widescreen DVDs and you'll have one sharp-looking picture, albeit in letterbox format.

NOTE, this is a 4:3 set! It is not 16:9, otherwise known as widescreen.

But, if it will do HDTV, that gets you that capability rather cheaply.

I found out about this on Saturday and am on the verge of buying one of them. However, there's a thread I found about blooming on these televisions. I'll have to see it for myself at Circuit City, but you should read this thread.

If anyone owns or has seen a model without the blooming problem *PLEASE TELL US*. I wonder if it's just an older batch that had the problem. I'd love to get this TV, but am still on the fence until I can watch it in the store for 15 minutes and see if the problem pops up.

Read the reviews on the CC site, lots of people having that "Blooming" problem on their sets. It's funny a few mention the 1080 capability on the TV through the service menus and a moderator answers that while it has the setting the TV cannot display 1080i, they even claim to have contacted Samsung about it.

I am tempted to get this TV though, at least just to try it out, worst comes to worst you return it with no problem. CC is good about that.

I'm not sure if it can't truly display 1080i. When I read that Circuit City answer, it seems like lawyerspeak that could simply mean that the tv is not equipped with a HDTV-tuner... so it could still be a functioning HDTV monitor with 1080i resolution. Side-by-side, another poster says the EDTV & HDTV look the same.

Well I was under the impression that only a very few tv's actually are equipped with HDTV tuners, just because it does not have the tuner does not mean it can't display an HDTV picture,. I was at CC a couple months back and I asked the guy about HDTV capability and he said only one brand that they carried had the tuner built in, I think it was Sanyo or something, all the others you have to buy the tuner separately.

So yea it sounds to me like it is lawyerspeak, sounds like they don't want people to know that it actually is capable of being an HDTV. Even though it doesn't have the tuner built in, which hardly any tv's tdo anyway.

Edit: I should note that the CC guy was talking about the CRT's, he did mention that several of the projection models had the HDTV tuner built in. I didn't ask which though since I was only looking at getting a CRT (no room for projection).

Most TVs carry the "HDTV ready" term. It means ready for another HDTV tuner...

Have the CC techie connecting the TV to a HDTV receiver. Tune to a HDTV channel PBS station
or a regular digital channel and see the difference. The HDTV broadcast channel is awesome.

well the best thing about hdtvs is that most of them have vga or composite input, does this tv have that feature?

Anyone own this rig? Please chime in with opinions!

So tempting...we just bought a new house and we don't own a TV (I have a 18" LCD that I use in my room, currently).

I just bought this a week ago for $725 delivered (32"). Let me comment...

The blooming is more technically called overscan bounce. Out of the box, mine lookd absolutely terrible and I thought I was going to return it. Basically, imagine any time text/logos are at the bottom of your screen and the screen image changes very quickly from light to dark or whatever. The text will "jump" as the image changes... it's actually quite significant. I turned down the brightness and contrast to minimize this, but I haven't had a lot of time to check it.

I hear the TV is great for DVDs (I just bought the Panasonic S35 progressive player for $100) but I haven't actually watched it yet.

My geometry is off - I haven't had time to fix it yet. I notice on my Tivo screen that the very bottom is chopped off... hopefully this will be easy to fix.

I turned on HDTV mode and got an HDTV cable box. It was pretty disappointing... the edges of the image can "boil" and the middle has poor geometry.... straight lines are actually curved. It was pretty neat for about 10 minutes (wow, I have HDTV) but then the geometry irritated me and that was the end of that.

So, long story short, yeah the overscan bounce is definitely there. Turning down the contrast and brightness will minimize it but not totally do away with it. In the end, I haven't watched it enough to be able to give it a thumbs up/thumbs down, but I just got my tivo set up, so will start watching a bit of TV.

BTW, I got this thinking "I don't know how bad this blooming/overscan bounce can be, they must just be picky" but it's pretty noticeable. If you don't want it and aren't actually going to use 1080i, just go for the Toshiba or Sony models, which are only $50-100 more. Yeah, they won't do 480p, but if you plan on watching normal TV mostly then you won't be missing out.

Also, you should be able to see the overscan boucne REALLY easily in the store. Try to tune to a channel during commercials when there's text at the bottom of the screen (car commercials, action movie commercials look really bad).

I have the 36" model without any blooming. I do have a discoloration spot on the left of the tube that I have been told is due to a magnetic field, but tommorow I am going to call Samsung and have a technician come out and look (in home warantee through Samsung).

Walmart sells two true 32" 4:3 CRT based HDTVs, a Sanyo for $649 and a Philips for $749. The Philips is a true flat screen. Nice monitor. But then if I was spending that much I'd go $100 more and get a 30" 16:9 one.
