Whether or not this tv has 1080i, HDTV broadcasts are only in 1920x1080 interlaced resolution. This means this tv is clearly not a HDTV, but instead a high resolution 4x3 TV.

Also progressive scan is 1280x720 progressive, also a widescreen resolution. This TV at 4x3 is neither true HDTV or Progressive scan. That being said I'm sure its a very good picture nonetheless.

pyrojunkie - so just because a TV has 4x3, it isnt HDTV? Or are you saying something else?

This Zenith has integrated HDTV tuner and is 4x3.

I understand now what the CC people were trying to say (i think) - it's a HDTV monitor, not a set capable of receiving OTA HDTV broadcast.

I persoanlly dont have a problem watching widescreen on a 4x3 set - I cant afford a widescreen set so I'm not going to sit on my hands for a few years until they come down low enough in price.

Pyrojunkie, I suggest you go to AVSForum to learn exactly what HDTV is.

By enabling the function in the service menu, this TV can indeed resolve 1080i, which makes it an HDTV. HDTVs can indeed be 4:3, they just have to be able to display 1080i in 16:9.

720p is another ATSC format that is now starting to gather steam. I prefer it over 1080i- There aren't many TVs that support it, but that will change since more broadcasters are using it.

480p is what's commonly known as "progressive scan".

****EDITED****

I bought this TV and accessed the Menu.

I dont see the option to enable the TV to 1080i.

Maybe they started manufacturing the correct components.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

False Alarm

That last step is a bit tricky but I figured it out.

I just bought this from Amazon.com for 450 plus 70 shipping. There is also a 50 dollar GC for elec. purchases over $250. Plus I use the amazon Visa card so I get I think 4x points for this... Great deal, no tax either... Just waiting for delivery... Cant wait to hook up my progressive scan DVD player. Anybody else get this recently?

If the overscan bounce is related to a weak power supply, can't we just install a power supply w/more oomph? Serious question. Feasible? <$100?

I wouldn't mess around with the insides of a TV unless you know what you're doing. There's a serious risk of electrocution.

As for changing the PS- why bother? We're coming up on the holiday season and low-priced HDTVs are starting to become common. I've seen a few 4:3 32" models at Walmart for $600-$700.

What's "this" there are at least 2 models in question, guess I will go to Amazon myself but it helps to be clear :-]

Also - the PSUs in tvs are different than those of our computers. That and if you were to install a computer PSU, would it really be worth it to have fan noise in the background just to save a hundred or two hundred bucks?

Just arrived at my door from Amazon.com; using the $30 from the Amazon visa it was around $410.. ~$460 with shipping. I had a little trouble getting it to power on; something about a cold start when I called Samsung, but they helped me schedule a servicing. In-home warranties are great. The TV powers on now; I haven't had time to adjust the picture or anything but gamecube looks great on it. I'm going to use a calibration dvd pretty soon.. we'll see how it works out.
