Good find...decent deal, for a decent drive. BTW, I think this might be the one HP drive that you can mod to become a 12x drive. Not sure. Anyways, hope somebody can use a deal like this.

BTW, remember (back in the day) when we used to fawn over 8x and 12x drives? Not too long ago, but enough for us to see where TECH has come and gone.

not a bad deal if you're only looking for a 10x...a 24x can be had for a little more and you'll definetly appreciate the increase in speed.

how can the list price for this drive be $170? outrageous IMO...a 32x can be had for $120 shipped at newegg. oh well!

Couldn't you buy 2 and then get free shipping. It says free shipping on orders of $99 or more. Just buy something piddly to get it over $100.

Yep, I just got 2 in my cart for $94.98 total, shipping and tax, as shipping if free for $99+ orders, and there ain't tax in TN!

Too bad I don't need a CDRW!!

Not a terrible price for a budget system, but since this drive comes
from the pre-burnproof era, it's truly two generations behind.
4x rewrite and no burnproof makes this an ideal drive for a system you're
building under price constraints for someone else...

This is a rebadged Sony drive, incidentally.

True!
But, I've got a 12x TDK drive and about 800 12x or 16x CDR discs.
So, I don't think I'll be upgrading to a 32x anytime soon!

I should pick up a couple of these 10x HP drives and bundle a couple hunred of the blank
CD's I have and pawn them off to friends. This might allow me to upgrade faster!

Exactly. We have a 12x Sony at work (HP drives from this era were also based on Sony drives) and I'm lucky if I can burn a disc at 6x or 8x without getting a buffer under-run error. I'd pony up a few more bucks for something with burn-proof on it. You can find used 12x drives in the 'for sale' forum for good prices - which is well worth the investment for burn-proof technology.

Unfortunately, this is not a great burner. I just got a LiteOn 24x10x40 to replace my previous 8x version of this HP drive. Both are the same Sony drive with no anti-coaster technology, and I got a lot of coasters with mine. So did friends with the same drives.

With 24x drives going for around $80, I've seen some very good deals on 16x drives with one anti-coaster setup or another.

I burn my 16x CD-Rs at 24x--no problem. I havent' tried 8x or 12x at 24x yet though.

Not hot considering all the 24x drives available for under $60 in the last couple of weeks.

2 Pacific Digitals are still available in Downers Grove, IL OD, and 2 at Lombar, IL OD.

Additionally, aren't lots of HP drives not supported by clonecd?

I got this drive last year for $70 in a historical PM at Staples. A decent burner, but as has already been mentioned, no burn-proof technology. Coastered more than a few on Nero and Disc Juggler with this drive. It's still currently my only burner, waiting for those 32x or 40x's to get cheap, could be awhile huh. "Robust Software" uh, okay, sure.....

Haha. These things aren't obsolete. Come on, 2 CDRWs for less than $100, shipping and tax included. That isn't a horrible deal. No MIRs, no waiting on MIRs. Just pay ~$47 and be done.
