Yes, please make recommendations on the best choice for the 5mp cameras they carry.

There is no such thing as a good 5mp camera for $200, or even $300 for that matter. Do yourself a favor and get a good 3mp camera instead of a poor 5mp camera.

So, the Kodak DX4530 is a bad camera? The review at Steve's Digicams seems to disagree.

Wish I had read that before I went out and got the Sony Cybershot DSC-P92 at lunchtime! FYI, they are OOS of the Vivitars at the Clovis, CA Target and honoring discount on any other digital cameras.

Agent2099 -- what camera would you recommend?

Does anyone else here recommend one of the other lower resolution cameras as opposed to the cheap 5mp cameras?

I appreciate your expertise... I'm not too knowledgeable about digital cams, but am anxious to upgrade from my older Kodak 2.1mp camera.
Gotta love it when people make blanket statements like this :disgust:

There's NOTHING wrong with the Sony. It's not a low end cheap 5mp cam by any means. Once you use it, I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Here's what Steve has to say about it

I totally agree with Steve, etal.
I have other 5mp cameras & not a one of them is any better than the DX4530. I'm looking at it on my desk right now.
Also, the DX4530 is top rated by both of my daughters and that carries a lot more weight than Steve'sDigicam, least of all, agent 0000.
My $1,100 Minolta is not half the camera that the Kodak is and the DX4530 is at least the equal to my Sony (also $1,100).

Beware of a dealer who obviously makes more money from the sale of a $1,000 piece of goods than a $300 one. He can not help but have a hidden agenda.

Edit: I even had them page the on-duty manager and they wouldn't do it either. The other nearby Target has them in stock so no dice on this deal.

Yuhoooooooooooooo !! I got mine !!

Just did this deal today. Another "substitution" wonder. Wanted to get Canon SD100 but they were out of those so I went for the second choice Canon A70. Total out the door was slightly under $200. The clerk even asked if I wanted to apply for the Target Visa and get "another 10% off". Thanks for the deal.

Thanks for the tips. Scored a Canon A70 as a substitute for under $200. I was tempting for the Kodak DX 4530 at OfficeMax for $200. But my old Kodak DC 4800 died on me for no reason. I have all sorts of accessaries wasted on this one (batteries, charger, extension lenses). A70 is a replacement for the dead one. I can at least use the compact flash cards. Kodak DX 4530 uses another format, feels more filmsy and probably has a inferior lense.

I never have any luck with price matches and such. BUT this time i scored! Got the raincheck at the camera department, went to a cashiere to have them printout the raincheck receipt, took it back to the camera department and got the Sony p92. Regular price was $329....$360 with tax. The 33% got it for $221 and $20 tax....total $241. So saved $120 on this camera. I had no problem at all and it only took about 10 minutes to do the whole thing. I'm out of town doing this. The batteries are charging now. Out of all the cameras at Target's camera department, which do you guys this is the best....considering something around a 5mp? I did this deal real fast because i didn't have much time so went with the Sony. Thanks for the post and all the info on this deal! Robert

edit: The Sony p92 uses sony memory sticks. It comes with a 16mb stick. I have 2 other sticks that were for my Sony digital hi8 camcorder. Anyone know of an online site to get a higher mb memory stick at a great price? thanks

Picked up a DX4530 for $200 plus tax. This was easy, and a way to soothe the pain over not getting one from Officemax!

I see a lot of people are buying the Canon A70 or the Kodak DX4530 instead of the Sony Cybershot DSC-P92. Did I make a wrong choice?

I realized later that my old Kodak uses Compact Flash -- I'd save some money if I didn't have to buy a Memory Stick Pro.

same thing as 1ucid. Got an unusually high cc limit to boot! Man this A70 is sweet. Goes well with the 128mb CF for $25 after MIR at staples.

I was able to get in on this deal also. I got the Nikon Coolpix 2100 for 199.99 - 66.00 = 133.99 plus tax. Plus, there is a Nikon rebate at http://www.nikonusa.com/fileuploads/pdfs/coolpix_winter_rebates.pdf I am not sure about the rebate. It indicates that the receipt should include name address and serial number of camera, which is not on the target receipt. The Nikon web site lists Target as an authorized dealer so it should work. 133.99 is a great price and IF the 20 mir works, even better. Also, at first the manager said the most he could take off was 15%. I presured him a little and he said I should talk to Guest Services. They looked at the rain check and said they had to honor it. This was purchased at the Boardman OH store. This is my first post, please let me know if I forgot anything.

Good Luck !!

I'm still doing research online for the Sony p92 i got this afternoon and the batteries are still charging. One drawback of this camera is that it uses the memory stick (as i mentioned earlier) and it seems that the other kinds of memory cards can be had for cheaper most of the time. I did my purchase at Target real quick because i was in a rush. If one wanted the best camera at Target wouldn't a 5mp digital be the best? Is this Sony model the only 5mp camera Target carries? I didn't have time to check them all out.....just had notes from the thread and i had the p92 as my first choice. Even if this particular camera has some minor drawbacks, wouldn't the fact that it is 5mp be a really good deal? As you can tell, I'm wondering if i got the best one i could get. I have to budget my money carefully (as most of us do) and wanted one to last me for a while that had great picture quality. Oh, this camera shoots pics in jpeg. Is that a minus? It does shoot video in mpeg, so that might be a plus. It also can record sound with a pic if you want. Anyone else get this one and do you think this one is the best bang for the buck that you can get at Target? The sale was still on today...i wonder how long it lasts. I forgot to pick up a flyer. Robert

I noticed this thread at 8:45PM Pacific Time and called my local store to see what time they closed and luckily it was 10PM. I ran down there and they were OOS, so I looked over the cameras they had and went for the DSC-P92 5MP over the Kodak and HP 5MP's. Came out to be $239 after tax. Reviews look pretty solid.

When they printed out the raincheck the guy asked me how many I wanted. I said "one" at the time, but after purchasing the camera, I asked for another one. The raincheck is in effect for a while, so as long as the Vivitar stays OOS, I have a raincheck to give to a family member or friend so they can save some cash.

I was able to get the Fuji S3000 for <$220 OTD, but I have a chance to exchange it for the Canon A70 in the morning. Any thoughts on the best deal would be appreciated...I have only a few hours

I have a 128M CF card and a case that will fit the Canon. The Fuji is odd shaped, but the 6X optical is really nice, but no sound for avi clips ; the Canon can do 640X480 clips w/sound. Both cameras are priced at $299, any advice out there? I'm no serious shooter, just want good family pics and good printed copies

BTW my salesperson had "selected" a substitute Vivitar, but they were out of that one too, so they agreed to sell any 3MP camera @ the 33% discount. Nice deal and ty!

"Did I make a wrong choice?"
if it fits the needs perfectly and was the price desired, how can it be wrong?
notice that one respondent said he was disappointed in his choice because it didn't have sound for movies... out of the six or seven cameras i own, i have used maybe one to capture movies ONE time.
ergo, that option wouldn't matter TO ME. but it did, TO HIM.
do the research. test the cameras out.
nobody is gonna know what somebody needs in a camera, except that somebody (or someone very close to them)
out of all my cameras, i would have to say that i like my s10 the best (it's discontinued! don't bother looking for it @ tgt).
i thought i was good at taking pictures, but it was really the camera.
easy slow exposures, auto-focus illuminator, great in low-light (ime) etc etc etc
perfect for night-life, parties, sightseeing... but that's mostly what i use it for...
good luck! hope everybody enjoys their purchases to the fullest!
