Here's an oddball drive, a 650GB Seagate. Says "AVAILABLE ONLY AT FRYS.COM." Maybe these are just 750GB drives with a defect on one side of one platter? Dunno...

$109.99
Limit 2 per household

I'm thinking of buying two of these with one of those 320GB SATA "limit 1" drives to save on shipping. Then, I can get rid of my older 400GB EIDE drives (using external bays). I'll have to think on this. Still, it is around the same cost as a 500GB drive so 150GB extra for free is pretty nice.

I'm guessing they don't use one side of one platter of a 750GB drive and then fudge it in firmware. Hmmm, wonder if these use the new higher density platters of the 7200.11 drives... if so then it'll be extra hot 'n spicy! I'm actually considering picking up a few of these. I counted and I have around six 400GB EIDE drives in external bays that I can upgrade.

Maybe you get lucky and get one of those little "We've upgraded your drive FREE of charge for you" to 750GB!

(Well, one can dream can't I?)

I remember 4 years ago, Best Buy had a 75GB hard drive on Black Friday and a big slash that said it came with 5GB free! Crazy.

well the 7200.11 uses 250 gb platters. so thats still doesnt make sense.

it is probably a 7200.10 with the platters stroked.

4 platters about about 165 each. the 750gb 7200.10 uses 187 gb platters, but shortening it does improve access speed somewhat (by not having any data on the slower inner tracks)

How about the 334GB platters that Samsung was supposed to come out with? 2 x 334GB round down to the nearest neat number.

Like the Maxtor deal Fry's had... sold it as a 250gb but actually was 320gb.

Is anyone else having problems reaching Outpost/Frys.com? I can't hit the site this morning and pinging it gets a "destination net unreachable."

Yeah, I mean, if you have your OS on something real fast already and you have an ongoing need to archive data, I am of the opinion that you may as well look at cost/GB and warranty length before considering the SATA vs. PATA argument. As long as you have a free slot on a PATA controller somewhere, that is.

I have been all about grabbing deals on USB 2.0 PATA external boxes, myself. I know I can always sell an external drive I throw together at a great price if I feel like I have become a little too storage rich... a feeling I have yet to experience ;-)

I agree about $/gb and the externals......but in general there are just fewer and fewer places to plug pata into anymore. I'd use one of these to upgrade a 500gb external, but only if it was 750gb.

I bought a Galaxy external enclosure (plays iso files as dvds, as well as most audio formats). I need the pata version. This was a perfect find for me.
