The GS does wear down quickly. I game maybe a couple hours a day, and after 3 months I can already notice wear in my area of mousing.

I had an original ratpad, which is now the XT, which lasted a bit longer, but exhibited the same wearing after half a year or so.

The "wearing down" is common to hard mouse pads (and even some hard surfaced pads). Basically the used area of the pad becomes smooth (normally they have a texture) and this causes the mouse to not glide over the pad.

I actually found a solution to this.

C4 Classic

This is a teflon sticker that you can trim to size and apply over your mousing surface. I did this to an old Everglide Giganta hard mouse pad (similar to XT Ratpadz) after it wore out. I've used it for around five years now with the C4 on it and it is starting to show some wear, but is still fairly slick.

Just ordered the GS. Never had a "gaming pad" before.
Thanks for the heads up...

The GS is nice although to be honest I much prefer my Steelseries. The GS is my daily use pad and the steelseries is my gaming one.

I have tried both, but never combined them together.
Ratpadz does wear out after some use, and it warps on top of that. For that price though, I think it would work ok.

C4 Hyde stuff used to be a micro fad here at AT a few years back, and I jumped on the bandwaggon. Placebo made me think it was the best thing since <insert your favorite object>, but later I realized it wasn't as smooth as I wanted it to be. Plus for some reason it seemed to gather dirt and dust way too fast.

Func Surface 1030 is what I am looking at now, their "custom gear utility" sounds mighty enticing at a reasonable price.

I bought a whole roll of the teflon disks for my mouse feet during the C4 craze. I'm glad I did and glad I got the full roll as they are about half gone.

I've always been a Func man myself. Anyone who has had both care to comment on how they compare?

cool, i needed a gaming mousepad, i got the XT. their site says the XT lasts 5 yrs and GS 1-2 years. i don't want to buy something to last 1-2 yrs so $10 more for the XT...

actually, i'll try the GS first and see how that is. i figure if it wears out i can buy a new one instead of keeping the XT for few years (which will no doubt wear out also).

I've got both versions, the GS and the XT.

I actually originally ordered the XT, but they sent me a GS by mistake, so after talking with the owner (who incidentally is also the owner of HardOCP), he asked me to keep the GS and he had them send over an XT at no extra charge.

I think my GS has been sitting inside my computer parts bin the whole time - the XT's quality is noticeably better. It's thicker, has very little flex, and it doesn't have the very slight concaveness that the GS did.

one of the worst "gaming" pad ever. not only it wears out itself (visible powder), it's roughness destroys mouse feet. The rubber feet of the pad also adds to it's ridiculous thickness.

func is miles better.

I used to use only Ratpadz....just switched this week finally to an Icemat. After going through 3 Ratpadz in the last couple of years due to getting worn down and having smooth spots on the pad.

And like others have said, it also eats your mouse feet as well.

I went on newegg and ordered the SteelSeries iCEMAT and it blows the Ratpad away. My accuracy in COD4 has doubled what it was with the Ratpad.

iCEMAT = best pad i've ever owned!.....and yes it is glass so it will never wear down.

icemat is definitely better, but not for everyone; for one thing, it gets real cold, especially for someone like me who gets chilly fingers from sitting in front of the computer for too long. Besides, if you tend to sweat a lot under pressure, you better look for something else.

I liked my Icemat, but I went back to a cloth pad for comfort reasons. Xtrac cloth pads are my favorite now
