Pardon my ignorance but...

This week I picked up both this card (Aureal 1500) and the Altec Lansing speakers on sale at CompUSA. I am working in Windows ME.

The card does an okay job with games but when I run PowerDVD, and try to run it in four-speaker mode, all I get is silence. It runs fine in two speaker mode, but nothing else.

Should I be able to extract 4.1 sound with this setup, or do I need another card to hear my DVDs in surround? I was under the impression that the card would allow me to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mumford, the All Purpose Nothing

Which version of Power DVD do you have? Most OEM versions are only 2 channel. Also, if you have the 4 channel version, you need to configure it in Power DVD to the 4 channel setup (under the audio tab, within configuration).

Here's a link to find out about your version. Power DVD

I'm not sure which version number I have but it is a full, non-OEM version. When not playing a DVD, I can get into the audio configuration panel and change the set-up to 4 speakers. However, when in this mode, all I get is silence. Sound will only come out in 2-speaker mode. I had heard of problems like this with Windows XP but I thought I was free and clear with Windows ME.

Does it make a difference whether I am outputting from the analog or digital connection of my DVD drive? Currently, sound is being ported to the card from the analog connection.

I don't think it makes any difference. I just bought this card so I am not sure. I don't know about ME but look in your volume control panel open options and check properties. Then look at playback and see that the 4 speaker box isn't muted.

for those of you having an issue with volume.....I just got the same sound card you did and I found out how to get it to work on Windows XP Professional. When you put it in one of your PCI slots and start Windows XP up it will detect new hardware and install the XP drivers for it.
Now after that you need to go into your Volume control settings and choose Other and then it should say AC97 Conrols in the list of Others. Make sure the 3 audio modes are on and that they are checked off. The choice you need to have all the way up in the list is Front/Rear.

This will boost the volume bigtime.

LITTLE KNOWN FACT (alright, my opinion !!!!

The Aureal chipset is MUCH better than Creative's Chipsets when it comes to CPU cycles. Reasons I love Aureal,
1) Software was better than Creative's for general use (they had a great control center with a great equalizer program).
2) Less registry additions by Aureal than Creative
3) Lower CPU usage

I think the sound quality difference was negligible but I'd go with Aureal every time if I could.
Just my opinion

good deal,
my monster mx300 just died a couple of days ago, so I ordered one today.
I still don't understand how a company with a good product can just go under

I got my soundcard a while ago, but I just got the chance to install it yesterday in XP. XP just auto detects it, no problem at all.. Does anyone know if there is a daughter card to this sound card to add spdif out (optical out) to this board? My denon receiver has only one coaxial in and the apex dvd player took that slot already. The receiver still have 3 spdif in and I would like to make use of it.

Boogak: Are you running your card in XP? I'm outputting the sq1500's coax out to the coax in on my JVC RX-888V, but no sound. Any suggestions? BTW, XP is detecting the card just fine.....just did a fresh install and it loaded all the drivers.

Yup, running off of Windows XP. Make sure you use only the default drivers off the WinXP cd, do NOT use the newer Windows Update drivers as they kill the digital coax connection (found this out from the Vortex of Sound forums).

Thanks Boogak, problem fixed! Sounds great!

TypeE: I haven't tried it, but theorticaly couldn't you just run an RCA spliter out of you're coax in on your reciever? As long as your not using the two devices at the same time wouldn't it work?

i had this card for a while.. its an improvment over my onboard sound and a great deal. however... im not sure how to connect 4 speakers to it. I have hooked up the front 2 speakers in the FRONT ouput jack and it works fine. I had a complete different set of speakers (2 speakers +1sub) and hooked it up to the REAR output jack.. and i dont get any sound on the rear. any suggestions?

A3D rocks! screw creative! i got the other Aureal A3D Vortex Advantage 8810 awhile back from SVC for $5
coz didn't like the 4 channel feature of this one! Win XP has the drivers for this chip and besides there are
drivers for Win98/NT/2000/Linux on some 3rd party sites... rock solid card! Had CMedia Muse XL card in my
server that was crashing it and now A3D fixed that problem! ... godamn creative burried a top line chip

Agree.... Creative blows hard. Back in the SBPro SB16 days they were one great company, lots of innovation, good competition.... now they suck the sweat off a dead man's balls. My MonsterSound was retired with honors when I upgraded to a TB Santa Cruz. I'll never get a creative product again if I can help it. A3D rulled!

Ok, I bought this card and it seemed to install fine, however, there was no sound from the rear speakers. So I downloaded the suggested Win2K drivers from Vortex of Sound and followed their installation instructions (manually removing files, renaming driver.cab, etc). Got done doing all of that and still no rear sound, and to top it off, after playing games for about 20 minutes, I lose all sound, both in the game and back at the desktop. I end up having to reboot to get the sound back. Any suggestions (and no I will not switch to XP)?
