I got this at my Staples. Have used an older Acer with no problems. I don't do complicated or unusual CD's, but I just made a full audio CD for my daughter with songs from about 15 other CD's. Worked just fine. No complaints for $75.

Acer sucks.
I, too, got in on the day after Turkey Day sale at best buy for the Acer 10x4x32. Picked up two of them. One was DOA. Did not work with any media, at any speed (even 1x) and wouldn't work period. Would run the simulations fine, but failed within seconds of the start of the actual burn.
The second drive did work, but did not seem to be a quality drive like Plextor (or the rebadged Iomega's ...I got two of those too). It was VERY PICKY about media(more so than any other drive I have worked with), and CD-CD copies needed to be babied at below par speeds. It wasn't the machine, as it was a P3 with 128MB.

Both of the drives were returned. I won't buy Acer again. 2 for 2 are crappy odds at a sub par product.

I got one on Monday...there were about 3 more left then. It installed fine and I did a quick test with the CDRW it came with. I burned about 280MB from the HD onto it at 8x. It went ok and took about 3-4 minutes. With these reports of fussiness with different brands of media, I was wondering if people could post what media they have verified works with this ? Or is this beyond the scope of this forum and belongs in another ?

This seems to be a very cool deal. The store in my neighbourhood didnt have it so I contacted another staples 40 miles away. They shipped the product for free and I was billed for $125.90. Now i have sent $50 MIR si it will effectively cost me $76. No shipping...
Thats really coooooooooollllllllllllllllll............

This drive is useless. Save your money and get a Plextor, TDK, Yamaha, or AOPEN. This drive CANNOT READ/WRITE Subtrack Data. That makes this drive useless for backing up your CD collection. It is not burnproof but I have not had a problem with that aspect.
I unfortunatley did buy one of these and found out after CloneCD updated their app that this drive did not r/w subtracks.
Since then I have purchased a TDK VeloCD 12x and it works flawless.

I bought one of these Acers yesterday to replace my HP 8250i (4*4*24). I just did not like this burner. I cannot see any difference between HP and Acer in terms of the speed. Acer was noisy too. Eventually, I returned it back!

Stealing. Never. I buy every piece of sw. I use. I do make dupes of everything as protection. Have you ever damaged a CD beyond repair? Try getting a replacement? Instead you have to buy it again. With a $10k+ sw library, I can not afford to buy software twice. If that is stealing to you, then so be it.
