I got it!

Much better picture than my 10 year old Directv system. Really blows it away!

Most impressed indeed. Professional installation (really).

Again, the standard picture on my Sony XBR 27 inch is waaaaay beyond my expectations; I am really looking forward to seeing the HDTV picture as soon as I can see my way clear to an HDTV monitor....

HD thru my 811 to my S2 year old Samsung 32" 4:3 via component cables is AWESOME.
Some REALLY impressive looking stuff on discovery HD.
The show about the nightime, underwater on the Great Barrier reef was STUNNING. I am eveing watching crap in HD that I normally wouldn't just becasue it looks great.
The 522 is a nice receiver as well ;-)

The Dish-DVI cabale is missing a few pins from the standard DVI-D (not just the ones around the cross) - so again, from everything I've been told...No Dish Monitor, No DVI cable for you!

I believe you are mistaken, the folks at AVSforum are using DVI for their projectors and HD displays.

I have been told 2 different things about the 522 (I personally wanted the 721). The rep who came to my house told me the 522 requires a $5/mo lease in addition to the $5/mo DVR fee. So I was looking at $29.99 for Top 50 + locals, $5 for leasing the 522, $5 for the DVR fee and $5 for an additional receiver. ($45 a month) After they couldn't get me a 721, I declined and then was told there was no $5 lease fee if the 522 is plugged into a phone line. Which is correct?

I am still waiting for them to come into "stock" for the home plan. I was told they have them, just not for anyone wanting to get into the home plan. I hope they get in soon as I am itching to get some HDTV lovin'!

Depends on what plan you are on. I am on DHP. I have an 811 and a 522 thru them and a 301 that I won. The 522 is $4.99 mirror fee (that is the extra receiver fee you pay for each extra receiver over the 1st receiver), then another fee of $4.99 for DVR and then a $4.98 fee for not having phoneline plugged in. I just got a wireless phone jack and plugged mine in to eliminate the fee.
basically three $5 fees for the 522 (it is actually 2 recievers/tuners in 1. Yuou can eliminate 1 of the $5 fees by keeping it connected to a phonelinine 24/7.

So you are getting charged as if it is two receivers. Sheesh. Is it the same for all dual tuner models?

Can you answer a few question on the 522?
1. Can you record on one tuner (TV) then whatch what you just recorded on the other TV? In other words, can you share what each other records?
2. Can you actually watch any channel you're subscribed too on TV2? The brochure (it looks like it to me) indicates the TV2 output only passes channels (21-69 & 73-125). Is this true? If so, it's not really a two room unit. Or is it that you can put in a different mode for "home distribution"? Can someone explain this in detail.

You can record on either tuner, then go back and watch on either tuner. NO problem. The 21-69 & 73-125 is what you must TUNE your other TV to in order for the signal to come in via Coax. So I have my TV set on channel 60 and can tune the 522 to whatever programing I pay for on tuner 2.
You can use S-video, composite ( I think, don't use it) or Coax on Output 1 (also has an optical audio out). Tuner 2 must use coaxial. If you get it and the rooms are close together, u must change the channel the remotes use. My 522 sits next to my 811 and the 2nd out of the 522 goes to my bedroom a short distance away. They were all set to channel 1, so it was doing weird things before I changed them.

Bottom line is you can record something on tuner 1 and watch it on tuner 2 and vice versa. You get full functionality (except svideo and Dolby Digital via coax) on tuner 2.
It is a true 2 room system. They are supposed to offer a signal mode where u can record on 1 tuner and watch the other on a different channel via a single TV input, but that has not been activated yet.
I am quite happy with hy 811 HD, 522 and 301 setup.

Oh, yes u get charged 2xs for the dual tuners unless you keep a phoneline plugged in at all times, then they remove one of the $4.98 fees.

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and dropping Comcast. Can I go directly through Dish or do I have to use one of the internet sites to get the equipment.

Is AllSat a reliable site to go through?

If the 811 is backordered what would I do about having to activate in 21 days (what allsat requires)?

If I have the 811 and 301 with the America's Top 60 With Local Channels + HD package, for the two room install would my bill really just be $39.99 per month? And that includes local channels? I've check and I can receive local channels where I live.

AllSat says locals are included but I read somewhere else that they're $5/mo extra. (Dish told me they're free so I guess they are)

With the HD package are locals in HD or do I go OTA for those? Answer: Have to go OTA although in some markets CBS HD is available if you ask for (as read on FW).

Thanks in advance for helping me drop comcast!

Just called Dish just to see what they offer. The guy pushed the lease of the units and really wanted to sign me up today. I declined a few times before he finally dropped it.

I went thru vmcsatelite.com as they had the offer that I wanted and they were repsonsive to my email ???s. They just give u some certificate #'s and a phone #, then you call dish and they come out and hook it all up.
dishnetstore is also pretty good.

I went with DirecTV through www.expertsatellite.com. I priced both DirecTV and Dish out carefully, and -- arguments aside over which is better -- DirecTV does end up being a few bucks cheaper a month for what I wanted, which was a DVR in one room and a regular receiver in another.

Despite what it says on some of the Dish sites, there is NO WAY to get around the $5/month fee for the DVR. There are TWO $5 fees -- one of them you can avoid by leaving the thing plugged into your phone outlet allt he time. One of hte sites seemed to suggest that both can be avoided by leaving it plugged in, but that's just not the case. (Call Dish to confirm.)

Had no problems at all with expert satellite. Very friendly. They are also cheaper than the other big directv affiliates right now (rapidsatellite.com, for instance) because they give you the shipping fee back in a rebate. I paid $49.99 for the DirecTV Tivo + another receiver, and $20 shipping, with a $20 mail-in rebate on the shipping. (They are also allegedly sending me a free DVD player, though I'm not holding my breath over the quality on that one.)

I've been a TiVo fan from way back.

Anyways, lots of good deals to be had now, both on Dish and DirecTV. And cable prices keep going up, up, up....

Just wanted to say as of last night I now have my Dish HD setup. I did not get the dvr to go with it, just don't care about it. I had the 4 room install done and man had I forgotten how great the sat picture looks. This is far and above better than my Charter digital cable. It is so good the HDTV channels don't look much better

I went directly through Dish as I was a customer only a year and a half ago. They did a lot of work to get these done and did not charge an extra penny. It took them 3 hours to get everything installed!

I know that I should have gone for this but when I called my cable company to say goodby, they offered me a $280 credit to stay (spread over two months). I couldn't resist the $.
