Burninup, don't forget that the refurbished ADA885s are $239.00 but the brand new ADA885s are $199.00.

It costs $40.00 to pay someone to take them out of the box, scuff them up, and then put them back in the box.

That's a low skill job. They should be able to scuff them up for less than $40.00.

I don't know, it can be hard to get some things back into the box the way they were originally packed. Have you ever tried putting christmas lights back into the box on those little clip holder things they originally come packed in so nicely.

edit: I think dell should put some kind of hold on all of the orders. Take them out of the production stage. Put them into the "Exception stage: We are working some problems out with your order", so that at least I'm not lead to believe that there is no problem and that my product will be shipping on the day or before the day that is stated.

Well, mine are still "In Production" with an ETA of 12/26/2001. You know, they could speed up the delivery times on these things by simply loading a flat bed semi with new ADA880s, get it up to about 40mph, push all the boxes off the side, put them BACK on the truck and continue with delivery.

Or else they could simply ship new ADA880s using the USPS. The way they throw packages around the speakers WOULD be refurbished quality by the time they arrived.

Well, I finally got a second email confirmation. I ordered at 10PM on 12-12-01. I called last friday and asked what the deal was and was told I should hear something by end of business. I didn't so I called again yesterday and was told I'd hear something real soon. The CSR said the "spare parts" department was inandated with $300 speaker orders for $20.

I also ordered the $29 belkin SOHO 8 port switch on that order and they've split up both parts and sent separate order numbers for both. My switch shipped today, but the speakers have estimated ship date of 1-02-02. Looks like they're setting us up to cancel.

I think what is going on is that they've shipped out their inventory of, say, 20 refurbished speakers. Once those who are the lucky recipients of the first batch realize that the speakers are still defective and unsatisfactory, they'll return them back to Dell. Then, they'll send those speakers out to the next on the list of people who have ordered. It may take a few months, but we should all get our chance to have at least part of the system in our homes (I'm guessing the boxes will get pretty beat up after a few cross country treks, and parts will undoubtedly be missing as people forget to repack them). Of course, the problem will be when the recipients decide it's not worth the hassle to return the defective speaker, and Dell runs out of the original 20.

Just my guess.

Now I am curious to see if I get the speakers. When did this deal originate? My order was place 12/12/01 at 3:40 am. it is still "in production" and there is a charge on my credit card for the exact amount of the speakers. Has anyone actually gotten emails saying that they have shipped? hmmmm, I hope they come....

Uh-oh...

The funds authorization on my CC was released today... Not sure if it was a normal x # of days expiration, or if it was something initiated by Dell.

Ordered 12/12 10AM - no change in order status - still 12/21, no cancellation emails...

I can't believe this whole thing with Dell. They should honor eveyone's order up to a certain point. Has anyone received their speakers yet?

My order still says in production to ship on the 21st. If they just cancel everything, can they be liable for some kinda legal action??

My order is also scheduled to be shipped after Christmas.

If Dell doesn't honor our orders, we should write to the BBB. Seriously.

I still believe the speakers will ship, at least for most.

If you take this entire thread and replace ADA880 with Radeon 8500 it would sound very much like the Radeon deal from Dell a few months ago. It took 6 weeks before my 8500 was shipped, but it was shipped, it did receive it and I do like it.

The way Dell does business on these "deals" is certainly questionable, but for what you get it is worth the wait (IMO).

For those who didn't receive confirmation or whose orders have been lost, I would be unhappy, too. But, just because you didn't receive confirmation or your order appears to be lost doesn't necessarily mean that you won't receive the speakers. Four weeks after placing my Radeon order I received an e-mail stating that my order had been cancelled. Too bad, tough, no appology, nothing. Two weeks later Mr. FedEx pulled up in front of my house and handed me my package. Oh happy days!

Remember, whether it looks half full or half empty, the truth is that either the glass is either too big or there is just too little water.

I'm in the same boat!!
I ordered NIC cards on 12/11 - recvd. Ack & Conf. emails on 12/12 - then received cancellation email on 12/18 - BASTARDS!! :|

I also placed 2 orders on 12/12.
The 1st order at 8:30am - 2 sets of the ADA880's, 5 of the NIC cards, 2 of the USB/network adaptors.
The 2nd order at 8:30pm - 2 sets of the ADA880's, 2 of the 8-port Belkin SOHO Switches.

I received the Acknowledgment email for both, but NO Confirmation emails.
So, I've placed calls to DELL wonderful customer service over the past week.
I've been on hold for several hours total (about 6 calls), mostly getting the lines that
"we only deal with orders in <whatever> dept. - you'll have to contact this dept.", yada, yada BS!!
All the CSR's look up my account and do not show any orders that I place.
One idiot even told me that "if you didn't rec. the Confirmation email, then you didn't place an order".
I received the acknowledgment email, JACKASS!!! Therefore the order WAS placed!! :|
I finally came across one CSR that seemed to know what he was doing.
He looked up my orders using my email address and found the 2 orders and told me
they were really backed up and they had not processed the orders yet, but when they did,
I would receive my confirmation email.
Lo-and-behold, yesterday, I received and confirmation email for the 2nd order (ADA880/8-port switches).
They had split it into 2 separate orders - probably to make it easier to cancel the ADA880's later!!

So, they are all F'ed over there!
I'm holding out hope for the speakers, but not holding my breath!! :disgust:

Interesting quote from the head guy over at FW:

<< Here is the real story

I heard from my contact at Dell (who up until this morning had not heard of the situation). They were able to find out what is going on with the orders.

There was an inventory error, and the product was not pulled of the web. Because of this error, the orders cannot be fulfilled, and therefore the orders are being cancelled. An email to notify the customers will be going out by the end of the week. It sounds like there will be a small (10% software and peripherals?) coupon attached to this email as a "we're sorry about the mistake".

I want you to understand that this is not an "Official statement" from Dell - I simply took it upon myself to find out what is going on to try to reduce some confusion.

I did ask other questions, but have not yet heard an answer to them. questions like - Was this a price mistake? Was there any inventory? Did any orders ship?

Like many of you, I placed an order for this set of speakers too. I did think that there was a possibility that there was an error, but at the same time, having been in the consumer electronics industry - pricing like this for a refurbished piece of gear that was built off shore.... It isn't out of the question that it was a legitimate offer. Good enough to plan on giving the set as a really nice Christmas gift. When things started looking like they might not pan out, we did create a backup plan for that person, but it isn't nearly as cool as the speakers would have been.

Am I disappointed? Yes. That would have been a great deal!
Did they charge my credit card? No
Will I take any more time in fighting this? No. Although I would say that the 10% off coupon (if it happens, I actually wonder about the legalities of making such an offer in this case - I'm not real clear on the legal discription of bait and switch - nor am I accusing them of doing so) might fall a bit short in satisfying the people that placed the order (unless of course it is stackable). I believe it was a mistake. (My GUESS is that somebody punched in the wrong inventory number when receiving an order for something else)
Could this have been handled better by Dell? absolutely. It could have been removed from the site much more quickly. communications about the order could have been much better.

It isn't my place to be an apologist for Dell, or any other company. I am simply trying to distribute information the best I can.

Will I order from Dell again? You bet.
>>

... hehe. you win some, you lose some, i guess ... I wasn't really counting on getting them anyway. Like somebody else in the thread said, I guess I can just put that money to another hot deal.

<< to see that my order (1) shows up as shipped yesterday. >>

uh oh, and you orderd late on the 13th. Now the sh!t is really going to hit the fan. If they start randomly pulling people out of a hat to see who gets the limited stock I'm going to be pissed. I would think they should go down the line from who ordered first. I think they would have been better off to just not ship any.

What I like is that NO ONE at Dell has any idea WHAT THE F#CK is going on. Here is the response I received TODAY to the e-mail I sent to Dell on the day that all orders disappeared:

<< Dear Mr. Jordan,

Thank you for contacting Dell Online Customer Care.

I apologize for any inconvenience this matter may have caused.

I checked your order status against your customer number xxxxxxxx
Order number xxxxxxxxx and I show that your order is in production
status and the ship by date is 12-21-01.

Due to the many factors involved, Dell is not able to guarantee
any delivery date. The lead-time a Sales Representative gives
a customer is an estimated shipping date based on current conditions
at the time the estimate is given. Although this estimate is
usually accurate, certain conditions may cause the lead-time
to be extended.

Once again, I apologize and truly regret any inconvenience or
frustration this matter may have caused. We value you as our
customer and your satisfaction is very important to us.

Thank you for choosing Dell and have a wonderful day !

Respectfully,

Ashley

Damn, why is everyone so angry that their orders got cancelled or delayed? You all knew this was a long shot to begin with. If you get them, woohoo. If not, who cares. Dell isn't responsible for any errors on their site. You fools are just too damn greedy! Now you actually have to go out and buy your wife that nice sweater she wanted.

Btw, I called and a Dell CSR told me that people who ordered more than 1 set of speakers will have their orders cancelled. Others who ordered early will have a good chance of receiving them.

Probably means they can most easily lose your order without a trace if they want to.

These guys pulled the old "we don't have a record of your order" BS with me a while back which made me think they woundn't follow through on this deal. Their laptops still rock, but I don't think I'll ever bother trying any more of their peripheral deals - it's not worth the aggravation, energy and time wasted.
