I got cancelled now too. Too bad. Woulda been nice, but whatcha gonna do? However, i think a company like Dell should try to be a little more responsible, but then again, mistakes happen.

I agree with many here. I may be disappointed in not getting the speakers for the price I ordered them for but I'm not angry or mad about it. I do believe Dell should have done a better job in promptly informing customers that their orders would not be processed. I placed the order on dec 12th also sometime in the early hours after the post was made and got a confirmation email that same day. My order too was scheduled to be sent out on or about dec 21 and then later postposted to jan 2. And now when dec 21 rolls along, they finally send me an email appologizing for the error that they will not be able to process my order. This is the 3rd time I've ordered from Dell and right now Dell is batting 1 for 3 in processing my orders (the other 2 were not deals such as this was). Dell could have corrected this problem quite a while ago but perhaps they enjoyed the increased amount of traffic this generated. Their idea of giving you a 10% discount (which expires in less than 14 days!!!) to remedy their error is pathetic.

<< * Like replacement - We will not offer up a like replacement for this product because we ran out of supply. However, if it is needed for some reason, the best product to use is the Altec Lansing ADA885 (part number 69hkt). >>

Did you happen to catch this? Sounds to me like won't offer the item but if people make a big enough stink, they may send these as a substitute.

I've read how alot of you think some of us are being whiners about this situation, I don't think that's true. I feel Dell should have been completely upfront about this. The cancellation email I received said nothing about a pricing error. If this was truly a pricing error, why is one of their own reps stating the price for the speakers is $25 on Dell's customer forum. The msg also stated that all orders for the speakers were cancelled since they didn't have them instock. We know that's not true as at least 1 member rec'd her speakers today. Another member rec'd a shipping notice and is awaiting the speakers. What I'm curious to know is how did someone that placed their order more than 24 hours after alot of us get her speakers? While I'm happy she did receive her order, it doesn't account for how this could happen.

If they were out of stock, do you think Dell is justified in waiting 8 days before notifying their customers of this? I don't. It doesn't take that long to figure out you don't have the merchandise. You don't find it insulting that they wait until the day before the items were due to be shipped before sending the cancellation notice? I personally find it unacceptable and have sent them a message stating that. I don't think any of us are whiners. I think this whole situation was handled poorly.

It's hard to figure what Dell is doing by posting erroneous pricing on their site. This is a large corporation with resources that can statistically create a pricing structure and for whatever price they use purchase a correct inventory. After watching Dell do this over and over I am sure that this is not just an innocent pricing error. In the company that I work for if we did something like what Dell does heads will roll. If I worked for Dell and made a mistake that my former colleague has been fired for I would surely not make the same mistake. They should have proofreaders for this site. A multi-billion dollar corporation that depends on internet sales will have a good a staff as money can buy. Therefore, Anandtech readers - we've been had! In the company that I work for I am the IT guy and corporate buyer. There must be many just like me that have the same position as I do and are Anandtech readers. I have purchased from Dell many times, trusted them and did not have to report to my superiors why I purchased from them due to the reputation they have. From now on, all things being equal, I will not purchase from them. Easy, I am happier to realize this.

I totally agree. I mean hey, mistakes happen. Pricing errors happen. I could see how 22 could have been entered into the computer instead of 220. Maybe you think you pressed the 0 but it didn't actually get depressed all the way. Your in a rush to get home for the day, something like that. I could see myself doing this. It was a pricing error can't expect dell to take a 200 dollar hit on 7100+ orders just because of human error(they have plenty of disclaimers on their website taking care of this type of occurence). What makes me upset is that it took a week to cancel my order and that the price was still available for about two days. They should have seen the mass amounts of orders and know something was up. At the max I would say the price should have been up on the website for maybe six hours. The one guy reported that he ordered 7 units on 12/7 and got them all. If this truely was a pricing error why in the hell didn't it get changed in between 12/7 and 12/12(when this whole thing really got started). And now people are reporting that money was exchanged through paypal accounts and that speakers were in fact delivered. CSR's have no idea what is going on because they are quoting 23 dollar speaker prices over the phone and confirming delivery dates. I'm not saying that I should recieve anything from this deal and I don't think that dell is wrong to cancel. But why did it take so long to cancel. To me it sounds like they are simply understaffed. I simply will no longer shop with Dell. That is all I feel that I can do in this situation.

I will like all of you that say this is a simple pricing error rethink your position. Let's count the posts where Dell did not ship. If the one and same worker did all of these pricing errors and is the nephew of Michael then let us all short the stock. If that person was in any of the companies that you work for would he or she still be there? Were you this person's supervisor what would you have done? In my company if I didn't fire him I would be fired. Intentional errors mean that thousands of Anandtech readers were all wrapped up in this drama. All of us dreaming that great priced NIC Speakers etc. I want everyone to wake up! Dell will do this over and over if we dwell on the great deal we will get from them. The drama can then continue over and over like a bad soap opera. Tell yourself - how many times over the course of your order did you have the word Dell on your mind? Remember the ATI 8500? This card did finally ship, but how many of you ordered parts and were just waiting for your video card? How many times a day did you think the word Dell? Got a great deal on a NIC? How about February? Yeah, that's about the time when gig cards will be selling like hotcakes and your 10/100 will be the price of a 32 meg stick, or less. I can remember others. Dell has got us all thinking about them and we just sucked it up hoping, praying, excited and finally saying OK pricing error.
This will happen again........

Unfortunately, the moral of this to me is that if you find something that's obviously a mispriced item, ya gotta just place your own order, GET DELIVERY, and THEN post to a forum if you wish. Kind of takes away the beauty of hot deals forums, but these types of deals are never going to pass muster when thousands of people try to avail themselves of them. If I find one, you won't be hearing about it from me until it's sitting on my desk. That's just reality. I would suggest the same for you.

Dear Dell Customer,

Thank you for choosing Dell for your recent software and accessories
purchase. We regret to inform you that an error created the erroneous
appearance of stock supply for the Altec Lansing ADA880 speakers that you
ordered. The problem has since been corrected, but as a result we are
unable to fulfill your recent order for the speakers.

If you have any questions or need further assistance you can contact our
customer support team at us_online_accessories_support@dell.com
<mailto:us_online_accessories_support@dell.com>. All peripherals orders
that were affected by this issue have been cancelled; you will need to
resubmit an order for any additional products that may have been placed
during this time.

"Thanks Dell"

Curiously, everyone trashing those that are pissed keeps saying this was cllearly a pricing error-- that was not Dell's excuse and I have never beleived it was an error -- also that makes me an idiot, a moron, a ... Lot of bad things according to many of you -- name calling this time of year -- tisk tisk ! Santa may not visit you. Seems just as likely to me that Dell needed an increase in ORDERS to report on its financials so they just let it ride and waited to cancel so they wold not have to report the screw up so soon. heck, seems as plausable to me as their claimed stock error when they have known about the alleged issue for over a week and kept telling people their orders would ship (like the e-mail I received saying just be patient). WTF -- It doesn't really matter who, what or why. No speakers. I guess I need to go back and read my long standing signature and wish all a Very Merry Christmas

There is something funny! I rec'd the cancellation email from Doggie Dell last night. When I checked the order staus this morning, however, they "updated" the estimated delivery date from 12/26/01 to 01/03/02. :Q:Q

What does this really mean?

Get this...

I spent 35 minutes on the phone with a Dell representative two days ago discussing delivery. Since I will be out of town next week for Christmas break and also out of town most of January for internship interviews I asked him if I could cancel my order (I dont really need the speakers, just too good a deal to pass up). He pressured me to find an alternative person to whom they could deliver while I was out of town and, with some effort, I was able to set this up. Sent the representative the emails to verify this, etc., etc. Only today (date of shipping) do they give me the same lame email about their having been "out of stock." Took them two weeks to figure this out? I just hate that they couldnt let me know earlier and lied to me. The original mistake, in itself, was no big deal. But their shady way of dealing with that mistake makes me quite leery of voluntarily choosing Dell service, such as it is, again.

ok i thought i was gone from this thread forever. but it now seems as if Dell is dragging me along. i just got the dreaded email yesterday. i check the order status page immediatley after and it still said 'in production". i check back later that evening and it says there is no such order. i check again a little later and same thing. i was like "fine, but would have been great to get it if it all went well". now i check one more time and the order shows up "in production" with a revised ship date of 1/2/02? so here we go again, crosses fingers.
