This is a good deal! it's 10$ cheaper after shipping than my local Wal-Mart has them for after tax and it will play my SVCD's just like my Apex 500 does BTW if this is as good or better than my 500model it's a steal as mine gets used for DVD and SVCD all the time and it is great! I may pick one up for my bedroom

This is the best DVD player you can get for the money if you download and burn movies.

I got mine about a year ago for $80 and since I got it, my $250 toshiba has been gathering dust since it can't play VCD's or MP3's.

In case anyone doesn't know, you can also flash the firmware on these to make them region free, disable macrovision and change the splash screen. Fun stuff.

Look at the "hacking" link in one of the posts above.

Also, does anyone know if this is one of the versions that do not play VCDs? I know some of the later model AD-1500s only played SVCDs.

Features:
? DVD player from Apex Digital
? Key Features
? Compatible with DVD, SVCD, CD, CD/R, CD/RW, MP3
? Dolby Pro Logic audio
? Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM Ready
? RCA and S-Video outputs

This is what they have for description, it doesn't look like it'll play VCD. Does anyone know this for sure? And is there a way to hack it into playing VCD? It'd be a shame if it can't do lowly VCDs. Also the warranty is only 90 days, is this a normal period for Apex, or this is a refurb?

Hehe... I don't think apex.com would have a region-free firmware.....

try google.com and search for "Apex 1500 firmware"

This unit will not play VCD's.....I tried using one of these for VCD playback on a tour bus I was on recently and it was a no-show. To bad too...I'd love it at this price!

2crucial: Got to vcdhelp.com

I think the hackability depends on the unit you get. Looking over the forum and this page it looks like you can get lucky and get one that is CDR firmware upgradable, or get one you have to flash the ROM yourself (Although there are some guys offering to help you out on this one since you need a eprom burner).
If anyone gets one, let us know what the upgradability is.

I'd hate to find out this is just the dumping ground for all the people who bought this hoping it was a CD flashable one and it wasn't so they returned it.

Does anyone know if AD-1500 and 1500 are the one and the same thing. I am asking cause one of my friends just got AD-1500 from compusa and flashed it. CompUSA says you can play VCDs. So may be
this model is only eprom flashable (which seems painful).

But sitll for 52 bucks I would not complain.

So I guess the bottom line on this VCD yes/no issue is that current versions of the 1500 do not play VCDs.
The Apex knowledge base says they dropped the VCD playability because it costs extra $ to license and it's rarely used in N. America.
The hacking pages say you might get one (you can't tell without opening it) that is not upgradeable with new firmware (which MIGHT make it play VCDs).
For me, I like burning VCDs, so it's a no go, but I guess for most people (like APEX says) no biggie.

Liked my home apex 1500 so much, that I couldn't resist getting one for $52 delivered as a gift to my daughter's H.S. art appreciation class. Hope it holds up to the abuse it will receive.

I just got this player from CompUSA a few weeks ago.
Players with model numbers that start with "SV" need a new bios chip to be hacked. All others can be flashed.(who knows what you'll get)

Some people have experienced overheating and pixelation(spelling?) issues if you overburn a disk. I have to keep the mpeg file under 750MB or it starts clicking and pixelating at the end because it has a hard time reading the end of a disk. My pc dvd player has no problem with overburned SVCDs.

I'm not sure if I would buy this player again because of the problems I'm having with SVCDs since this was the main reason I bought it in the first place. I wish I had researched a little bit more for a player that would read an entire SVCD with no problems.

complaining because it won't play disc over 750 mb... hmm anything over 80 MB is overburning and is out of spec, you should be happy that it does 750 MB especially for the cheap cost of this unit
